I sit down with paper and pencil and just write every bit of fanciful junk that comes into my head. I literally sneeze out words onto the page, nasty and ugly. When the blockage has been removed in this fashion, the story starts coming. That's when I burn the paper and get back to work. Few believe me but it is very helpful.

I get to work out a lot of things on paper, turn a lot of negative life experiences into positive ones (or at least make money from them) by putting them down and sending them out the door.

Music. I normally listen to audiobooks while I drive because music is too distracting. It just takes the right song and I'm building plots and scenes in my head, which is not conducive to dodging traffic.

The last completed novel Whispering of Dragons, was a project I was engaged in by Neal Levin. He had become stuck for a period of months during the early stages, and we collaborated to finish it. He had the bare bones of the plot, I helped flesh out the details.
