I did notice the "Es'chers" staircase! My MSc (taught) starts of with Analytical number theory this year, and I am hoping to carry on with that and do a paper on Fractals next year. My real love is Symmetry - mathematically and visually. I have done some stats and probability and about 20 years ago did an MSc in Econometrics and forecasting. Have you read "Anathem" Neal Stephenson? Scifi fantasy with maths!
George Mazurek Yes, I did :-) It was a great book. I cannot recall any similar book now (except for Crichton's books), but I can recommend you "Uncle Petros and Goldbach's conjecture", it's a charming book.

Wonderful to see a maths professor writing sci-fi / fantasy. I have just finished a BA Hons in maths and am starting a Masters this October. Can I ask what your speciality is? Are you able to incorporate much maths into your stories? I downloaded "City of Wizards" and "War of Spells" yesterday, but haven't had a chance to read them yet - but looking forward to them.

Well, I studied mathematical anlysis and linear algebra, and now I teach courses on calculus, elementary linear algebra and elementary statistics. My research papers deal mainly with a decision theory (often under uncertainty) or some econometrics. I do not use maths in my stories, except for some funny details :-)
