A few years ago, my young adult son came home for a quick weekend visit and I realized he was extremely ill. Being an RN, (and a very stubborn Momma bear) I refused to let him return to his home in NYC until we got him checked out at the ER.
Long story, short. My son needed two artificial heart valves and a permanent pacemaker due to a strep infection. It’s hard not to think about angels when you’re sitting by your sick child’s bed running IV antibiotics round the clock.
Inspired by a gift my son had given me for my birthday a few months earlier—a wooden angel with the words “Believe in Miracles” splashed across its front, and in an effort to remain calm, strong and somewhat sane for him, I began to tell myself a story as I sat next to his bedside… the story of Rafe Ryder.

I love the peace and solitude of writing.

The same thing, billions of authors have said before me. Read, read, read, and when you're done reading...read some more. My mother used to say to me, "There is more to life than what you can find in a book." I'm of the opinion, though, that everything you need to know about life can be found in a book.

Rafe Ryder and the Brushstroke of Time, second book in the Rafe Ryder series. (Then it's on to Rafe Ryder and the Sea of Umber, Rafe Ryder and the Hand of Destiny, and last but not least, Rafe Ryder and the Blue Star.)
