Somehow I missed this question! My inspiration came from two places: one, I read a book about Encephalitis Lethargica (the real version of the disease in the book) and was properly horrified. Two, I heard a report on NPR about weaponizing the 'flu.
Boom. Last Star Burning. Weaponized, extra-scary flu.

I keep writing until it's gone :) This is different for everyone, but in my case, by continuing to focus, brainstorm, and actually put words on the page, it usually doesn't take long for me to get excited again.
So much of success in writing is persistence. Every project goes through a stage where it feels like a great big pile of garbage that will never come together. But, if you keep going, it gets shiny again.

Write. Read good books. Have other people read your work and listen to them when they say something isn't working. Don't listen to people who are trying to rewrite your story for you. Go to writing conferences, listen to writing podcasts, get involved in your local writing community. Put yourself out there and be proud of what you're doing.

For a lot of my projects, the initial inspiration comes from nightmares. I have really vivid, story-like nightmares sometimes, and I always wake up itching to write it down. A lot of times the project doesn't stay true to the dream or anything, it's just a spark of an idea. An image, or a character.
I'm inspired by everyday life too. People. The way they talk to each other, the way they react to each other or to difficulties. I also draw a lot of inspiration from other things I read, fiction and non-fiction.
