The only way around writer's block is through it. When I was starting out as a writer, I took classes from a wonderful teacher, Jean Byrant. She had a practice she called the "Zero Draft." Her instructions were to sit down and write continuously for 20 minutes, not stopping for anything. If you couldn't think of anything to write down, you had to write, 'I can't think of anything to say," and go from there. It really does break the log dam of silence that swirls in your head. Give it a try!

There are so many wonderful things about being a writer. Having a way to express your creativity is perhaps the best. And developing friendships with other writers is a close second. Writers generally are great company! And so are readers. I learn so much about my own work by listening to what readers think about it. But the very best thing about being a writer...is holding your latest work in your hands.

Write! Writing is the only thing that actually makes you a writer--as silly as that may sound. That being said, when I was much younger, I spent about five years calling myself a writer before I actually put pen to paper. Believe in yourself. Trust your ideas. Be open to feedback. And keep writing.

Between finalizing the outline for the remaining two books in my Frog Tale Trilogy, I'm working on "My Brother's Keeper", another Young Adult Fantasy about a teen-age boy who realizes his brother is actually a Sasquatch.

I am a procrastinator, so I can't really rely on inspiration. I have to force myself into my chair, open my file, and start pounding away. That being said, I do get moments of inspiration--usually when I am far away from pencil and paper or my computer. My best thoughts usually come to me either in the middle of the night--and they wake me up--or first thing in the morning. I'll often start telling someone about what I'm working on and that will inspire more ideas as well. Taking time away from my desk is equally as important as sitting at it. So, I like to take walks with my dog and/or family members. I also am a collage artist so doing that inspires me as well and I ended up doing the cover for "Once in a Pink Moon" and included some of my collages in the book as well. Inspiration is out there; I just have to be open to it. Sometimes I think that I don't come UP with ideas, they somehow find me. I just have to be open to receiving them.

I am currently working on a book, "My Brother's Keeper" about a teen-age boy, Issaac who realizes his younger brother is actually a Sasquatch. The idea came to me several years ago when we were driving to the Oregon coast via the Hoquiam. The countryside has particular feel of mystery about it and in the morning mist, I imagined a woman picking up a squalling infant from the forest floor and swaddling it in s hand-woven shawl. When she took a closer look at the baby's face, she realized that it was a baby sasquatch.

My maternal grandfather was born in Denmark and emigrated to Canada where he met my grandmother. When he left his home country, he changed his last name. We didn't find this out until after his death and we have never been able to find out why. He was in the military and was the personal guard to one of the young princes. We would love to know what motivated him to leave Denmark and why he changed his last name. Maybe he was a spy for the Danish court? The imagination runs wild!
