Writing prompts. There are dozens out there. "It's cold and windy. You're standing in a vast desert. A dust trail smokes in the distance. Traders are coming." -- what happens next?

Escape. When I'm writing, I'm living in the world I create. Let's face it, today's mundane life is just that -- mundane. We all long to live outside of ourselves, at times. Writing does that for me.

Learn the technical craft first. The nuts and bolts of good writing. Then focus on the loftier aspects of writing: story arc, character arc, sub-plots, conflict and suspense heightening.

Circa Summer 2018 I've got a sister project to Blue Across the Sea I call Shadow Shoals. It takes place in the same era ~230 years from today, after CMEs have destroyed the world's electrical infrastructure. But that happened long ago for the story. It's a story about abandonment, trust, loyalty and love. It takes place on the Chesapeake Bay. It portrays an older woman, who, like the Pied Piper, unintentionally collects children and helps them survive this savage new/old world.

Writing is a circular path. Imagine, spin and write, repeat.
Imagining what the world, or people or creatures might be like in fantastical situations, then wondering what the implications of the twists I impose (the spin) and then the writing of those scenarios.
Can I create a place where equality is valued above all other ethical constructs? What are the implications of creating such a place? How would it work? Then I get down to business and write about it. Sometimes it's a dead end. Sometimes one idea spawns dozens of others.

Blue Across the Sea comes from dreaming about the United State's Great Basin -- and area where the water does not drain into either the Atlantic or Pacific oceans. I wonder what it would be like if it refilled.
But more than that, I wanted to explore the aftermath of a pair of massive Coronal Mass Ejections and what would happen to society.
