i wrote my first story when I was seven. It was called "The Pink Rain". I've written on and off ever since then and was thrilled to have my first book published in 2005. That book, Georgette Heyer's Regency World" was of course inspired by the great Georgette Heyer's many wonderful novels. I've read books since I was three and it's the stories that inspired me to write my own.

I've recently finished writing my first adult novel, Jane Austen's Ghost. It comes out on 29 October and so in November I'll begin writing the third book in my Young Adult Fairytale series: The Snow-White Rebellion.

Complete a first draft of your book. Don't expect it to be perfect, just get it written. The secret to good writing is re-writing but finishing a manuscript is a HUGE achievement. Once you've got a finsihed manuscript then you can step back and see what you've got. Rewrite it as much as necessary and then set about getting it published.

Those magical moments when the words come and characters grow and develop and take the story into their own hands. That sense of being a conduit for a story you didn't even know was in your head. I love the extraordinary sense of pure creativity. Oh, and letting your imagination run wild.

Sit in my chair and write anything that comes to mind. Free writing is fabulous for overcoming writer's block. The hardest thing about being a writer is facing the blak page (or computer screen) if you can generate words then you have something to work with even if it's not very good when you start out. It's like a potter having a lump of clay - if they've got the clay then they can at least try to make something out of it. If they have no clay then there's nothing they can do. Words are like the potter's clay.

I read an article in a magazine about a group of wealthy young women in Paris attending a ball each year and being allowed to borrow haute couture dresses from famous designers like Dior and Givenchy. I wanted to write a book that let my heroine go to a ball like that so I wrote Angel's story.

I was at a Jane Austen conference and I got to thinking about how she'd only sold a couple of thousand books in her lifetime and even went out of print for several years after her death and now she's a massive icon. I wondered how she'd feel about that if she was in the modern world and what she'd make of 21st century life. I wanted to find out so I wrote a book! It will be out next year.
