Second grade, we were given the assignment to write a story that started with "And then a hand came through the bars." I loved doing it; I wrote about a gorilla but saved the information that it was a gorilla until the end. The teacher thought it showed inventiveness and liked it. That did it.

I have always felt my ticket for admission to parties and get-togethers was to make people laugh by telling stories. These stories almost always involved animals. At one party about five decades ago, an English professor friend suddenly looked serious and said, "you should write these up." So fifty years later, I did.
