David William Pearce The Buttman books are the result of a book I started to write and then shelved because I didn't think at the time it was something I could write effectively. One of the minor characters in that story was bored with his job and wanted to be a writer of gritty pulp fiction. "It'll be Monk Buttman, hard-boiled private dick," he tells a co-worker. I thought that was funny, but I also love that genre and I wondered as I was stuck figuring out how to write that book, so I asked myself, what would a Buttman book be like if I was serious? To that end I started writing about a guy with a silly name, which he didn't care about, and how he gets caught up in this plot to steal a cache of secret money that goes terribly wrong. And I enjoyed it so much I just kept going.
David William Pearce I had to have heart surgery and I had to take it easy. I always wanted to write and I now had time, so I challenged myself to see if I could do it, and I found that I liked it and enjoyed the process. I tend to write from the seat of my pants so there's always the chance that it'll go off the rails. After finishing the first book, I felt this was something I wanted to continue doing, so I did.
David William Pearce Right now I'm finishing up the 5th book in the Monk Buttman series.
David William Pearce As every writer will say: write, write, write. I also found that being in a group with other writers is a great way to hone your craft through review, criticism-which you can't get away from and will have to get used to-and to share the often isolating job of writing.
David William Pearce To me, writing is a way to make sense of the world we live in, and I find it both fascinating and interesting to talk about the world we live in through characters and stories. I like to see if I can pull it off in an entertaining way.
David William Pearce I tend to deal with writer's block, which for me is often more about where the story should go at wherever I am in the story, with some form of research-either in the style of the story or in connection to the story arc. If I just need to write, I have have a couple of blogs I use to write about either music or life in general, and this allows me to keep writing regularly, but with no word-count or limit involved; it's just whatever comes to mind. I also write short vignettes about the characters to keep them close when I'm editing or working on other things.
