You need to do two things. The first is read. The second is write. I think it also helps to experience as much of life as you can. Travel. Take a few classes. Sit on the beach and watch a sunset. Sing along to the radio. Get in the car and drive without knowing where you'll end up.

When I was completing my MA in History, I interviewed a few dozen German fire service personnel who worked during World War Two. As a serving firefighter at that time (I'm now retired), I often contemplated what that must have been like for them. It took many years before I started writing my novel, but I got there eventually.
