At the moment I am going through a bit of a nostalgic phase and I am catching up on a few James Herbert novels. The Rats was the first adult novel I read at the tender age of 14 (give or take). so I am rereading the trilogy and may tag on a few more for good look.

The Ward started as a simple story of lousy hospital service. Then after I think what must have been close to 5th or 6th rewrite, I hit on the whole punishment idea. I do have a few spin-off ideas, but if I can't get them to work, then that's what they will stay as 'ideas.'

If I hit a wall or I just feel the ideas are slowing up. I bring out my secret weapon. Several years ago when I was trying to get a grasp on being a writer, my wife bought me a writers tool kit. in the box is an egg timer and several cards that have topics, quotes and situations. You shuffle them and draw one of each and write.
