*You need to learn something about the craft. (It took me a few months to cotton on to that.)

*Show and Tell is good to start off with, but there is more to it than that. I would add Pace, Tone, Colour and then Voice. You need that even more.
I have met clever writers that break conventions but they know what they are doing.
*You may need to hit tropes to be a successful genre writer.
