The idea for Sailor's Heart came after a visit to Kielder Water in Northumberland. Before the valley was flooded to create Kielder Dam, this was the sight of the British Admiralty's "Stone Frigate", which features in the book. Royal Navy sailors who had suffered psychological damage but were considered possible candidates for treatment were sent to this facility.
