Read lots. Write stuff (don't worry if it's no good - you can always edit it later). Make sure all your spelling and grammar is perfect before you even think about sending it to a publisher. Google publishers and follow their submission guidelines. Be thick-skinned - not everyone will like your work and, sadly, the majority of publishing houses don't deign to reply if they don't like it. :(

The character always comes first in my writing, so if I hear a phrase out of context that I think could make a convincing character name, I then think about what that character might be like and what inciting incident they may have to deal with.
