I was inspired to write by the columnist George Will. He came to Chicago to write a Newsweek column about an organization that I worked for called Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly. It ran on March 3, 1980, and helped boost the work of this organization tremendously. In just a couple of days, Will was able to accomplish more than I had been able to accomplish in couple of years while working there. That showed me the importance of writing and the power of the press. Called "A Flower Grows in Concrete," the column is still a touching, poignant statement about the philosophy of this organization.
