It's a Goodreads artifact. Apparently their system can't handle authors with the same name (though they appear to manage just fine with same-named readers). They already had an 'M' and an 'M.', so they gave me 'M..' It gets stranger still in messages where where they double it up to 'M.. M..' My nom de plume is just 'M'.

Non-fiction: You have time to develop your arguments into their most convincing form. You let your imagination run unfettered for a while, then refine it into something that actually works.
Fiction: You let your imagination run wild forever! You get to invent worlds slightly different than the one we live in.

Humans like stories :) So I'm currently toying with the idea of putting some of these ideas into a novel.

Many of the issues that I've written about in this book come from discussions with my scientifically literate friends and colleagues here in Cambridge and greater Boston. Not a very representative sampling of humans generally :) What's new for me here is an experiment in seeing whether I can convey that same sense of wonder to general readers who have no background in biology or philosophy.
