If I'm not in the mood to write the part of a story I had scheduled to write that day, I don’t force it. I’ll move on and write something else, a different section, a different character or even a different story if I feel like it.
If I’m not in the mood to concrete on anything substantive at all there are a few little writing exercises I do. One is to just write some dialogue between two characters, normally in the format of a scene of a play – because I write a lot for the stage I’m really comfortable with this type of writing. Nothing I write down is likely to end up in the story but it helps me to develop characters and sometimes it sparks a new idea.
The most important thing for me is not to give up on my writing time for that day and have an early vino! If I have set aside time to write, even if nothing is flowing very well, I try to find a way to make the time productive. Then maybe have a vino.(less)

I went to a masterclass a few years ago where the advice was that to make a living as an artist you need to been working on seven different projects at any one time. To me that seems like a lot but I do appreciate that you have to have more than one active project at a time otherwise you may miss opportunity and/or fail to develop your skills over a period of time.

At the moment I’m in the infancy stages of a new novel, set in Sydney, some years into the future with several point of view characters. Like all my work I hope to be developing characters that have shades light and darkness, truthfully captures the cultural diversity of a time and place and promotes complex female characters. My other projects include two plays that will be produced in Sydney in early 2016.
