The story, a historical romance set in the years following the California Gold Rush, follows Mara McClain, a young Irish immigrant looking to begin anew in Victorian era San Francisco, where she struggles for both love and independence as a budding businesswoman in a male-dominated society.

A budding painter, Mara arrives in San Francisco with the intention of opening her own art gallery. But when she is met with both the physical and psychological obstacles of a woman acting alone in a male-dominated society, she struggles to find her way via love, independence and her own strong conviction.

Set amid the fascinating backdrop of San Francisco’s Golden Age (the post gold rush Victorian Era), Autumn Lady draws from an eclectic cast of characters, both historical and original, guiding its reader on an idiosyncratic journey through the highs and lows, the ballrooms and back rooms, the alleys and the promenades, and the enchantment and viciousness of an American city on the brink of a new era. Autumn Lady is not just the story of Mara McClain, it is the story of both a woman and a city coming of age in one of America’s most exciting historical periods. (less)

“A full harvest moon lit the sky. In its glow, there appeared an old woman dressed in black lace. A shimmering veil covered her head. With her back to the old oak tree, she keened wildly. Her cry was carried by the autumn winds and lost on the wings of the nightingales.”
AnneMarie Dapp, The Wall People

“A hand moved gracefully over the canvas, releasing the first colorful dot onto a sea of white. Her mind traveled to a different realm, and she joined in spirit with every human being whomever dared to take that first stroke, and she
knew the risks; she was willing to pay the price, because wasn’t that what the heart longed for? Whether it be by writing, painting, or music—one only needs to find the strength of courage to walk along the creative path, to search for one’s higher self, and maybe, for just a moment, to gaze into the eyes of God."

― AnneMarie Dapp, Autumn Lady”
