“A ‘weaned child’ refers to a child who is no longer fed at the mother’s breast. The Hebrew children were normally fed at the mother’s breast until the age of three and then a feast was sometimes celebrated at the completion of this critical stage (Gen 21:8). The weaned child has grown mature enough even to be entrusted to the care of others (1Sam 1:24).”
