obsession and meditation
There comes a point in the life of a debut novelist, about 3-4 months before the actual launch of the book, when your work is done, and all you have to do is sit back and wait for your pub date.
But here’s the thing— I like doing things. And when I’m not doing things I need to do, I tend to make up things to do. Like Googling. Googling is a thing to do. Googling my name and my book title to see if the book was mentioned on a bloggers tbr list or if a review has come out or if, say, Reese Witherspoon or Brie Larson were seen carrying it around…you know, important things to keep track of.
I’m going to be honest with you. I was getting a little obsessive. Somewhere down the line I let how my book was doing became how I was doing. So I turned to the three things I knew would help get me grounded: I got in touch with author friends who talked me down and told me that how I was feeling was normal, I dug up my garden plot, and I returned to my meditation practice.
I’ve been meditating off and on for decades, and for several years meditation and studying Buddhism was a central focus in my life. It has felt like coming home to return to my meditation cushion. Meditation helps me see clearly. So I am happy to report that, while I am cuckoo-excited about The City Baker's Guide, I am feeling less cuckoo in general, and am spending a lot less time on the internet.
Book news: Holy Cow! The City Baker's Guide to Country Living made it onto TWO incredible summer reading lists in the past couple of weeks! It is amazing to see my novel among so many incredible books written by authors I deeply admire. Absolutley thrilling.
Here is the delightful Refinery29’s 20 Perfect Books For Your Summer Vacay http://www.refinery29.com/2016/05/111...
And here is The Wall Street Journal’s Summer Book Extravaganza, where The City Baker was featured in the group A Moveable Feast of Summer Books! I can’t even begin to tell you how exciting it was to see this IN PRINT. http://graphics.wsj.com/image-grid/su...
In the Kitchen: I had a request for Baked Alaska, which delighted me till no end. The City Baker opens with my Pastry Chef protagonist making a baked Alaska. Here is a picture of the one I made this week:

Random Cheer: One of my favorite Instagram accounts is FancyFarmGirl. She is a farmer and breeds Great Pyrenees. She has a litter of puppies she is posting pictures of daily—check her out!
