Strawberry moon
Yesterday was the longest day of the year, a once in a lifetime day when the summer solstice and a full moon happened at the same time. I'm up early regardless of the sun, and I have been enjoying all the light in the morning. And I have found myself tinkering in the garden at dusk, only to find it was headed towards nine at night. I love these moments that slow me down and wake me up to the world around me, especially now, 7 weeks before my book launch, when it is tempting to live only in the future and in my dreams.
book news: the big news this week was The City Baker's Guide to Country Living was reviewed in Publishers Weekly, and it was wonderful review. To have a professional praise my book is an incredible experience--but more than that, the reviewer pointed out the themes in the novel that, for me, are the heart of the book. There aren't enough words to describe the feeling of reading this review. I cried alone on a subway platform when I read it. Here it is: http://publishersweekly.com/978-1-101...
on the iPod: I can't stop listening to Willie Watson. There is something so deeply felt about the way he sings, like he feeling every word. And his guitar playing. Good lord. If I managed to write just one sentence in my book that feels as deep and true as a Willie Watson song, I would feel like I gave something back to the world.

In the kitchen: I am happy to report I worked my last wedding of the season, the last graduation party, the last spring wrap-up meeting, the last everything until September. The summer slowdown is upon us! I still have to work, but the days move at a leisurely pace, and I have time to do all the organizing and cleaning projects I dream about when I am too busy. Here is a picture of a batch of mini eclairs a wedding party requested: https://www.instagram.com/p/BGzPxBrPZNs/
what i'm reading: Let's talk about what I just read. I finished Sweetbitter. I can't even begin to say how much I loved this book. It is so honest, so revealing, so skillfully told. This deserves every ounce of praise, and then some. My highest recommendation.
in the garden: I have been slowly engaging in the barbaric practice of thinning my flower seedlings. How on earth am I suppose to pick which plants will live? I am leaving too many plants in the ground. they are all too close together. Probably nothing will grow. In the meantime I surrounded the tomato plants with marigolds because they are suppose to keep out some tomato-leaf loving bugs. Plus they are pretty, and now that the peonies have passed, it's nice to be greeted by something other than green when I stop by the garden. Here is a funny picture of our tomato cages after watering:https://www.instagram.com/p/BGrKdcMvZ...
May we all really take in all of this light, so we can remember it in those dark days of December. Happiest of summer to you all!
