To answer your question, I'd say I'm usually doing something very mundane or dull - working, cooking, shopping - so that my mind begins to wander, but not so dull that I can afford to daydream. I don't want to get fired, burn dinner, or walk out of the store without paying. So instead of drifting through fantasy-land in my head, I subconsciously start to toy with ideas - tease them apart and follow individual threads. That's how stories are made.(less)
