Lessons in Life, Love, and Work from the Song of Solomon
The Song of Solomon (Songs of Songs)
The Song of Solomon is one of the most intriguing books in the Bible. It is a book of poetry about lovers, courtship, and marriage. And it goes on how they work together in making the ideal family.
However, the book does not always sing about happiness in life. It also details the challenges in life and in a relationship. But what makes Song of Solomon unique from the other books in the Bible is that it talks about physical love within marriage.
The Importance of the Song of Solomon
In contrast to other books of the Bible, the Song of Solomon talks about love in romantic ways. It talks about courtship, marriage, the consummation, and the challenges in marriage. This is what makes the book very important.
Song of Solomon provides a template for the faithful to follow in building families of their own. It is the celebration of love between man and woman. The book shows that life experiences including the love between man and woman is also important to God.
How Can One Apply the Lessons in Life?
The poem of Solomon paints the picture of God’s ideal family, life, and work. The Song of Songs teaches that a household should share the joy of work. Labor is very essential in one’s life. As written in Song of Solomon 1:8, “If you do not know, O fairest among women, follow the tracks of the flock and pasture your kids by the shepherd’s tent.” This passage explains that one can always find a person of worth working.
Song of Solomon 2:12 says, “The time of singing (pruning) has come.” This clearly means that work is a meant to be a celebration of God. This signifies that finding joy in labor for oneself or for family will lead to becoming a success later in life.
In addition, the book offers encouragement from courtship to marriage to the consummation and assurance of love. Also, the Song of Songs teaches readers in accepting changes in life. The verses teach diligence and strength during times of trials. By having the Bible in one’s life, one will be guided by the Word of God in living an ideal and fulfilled life.

Important Facts about Church History
Many people all over the world do not have enough knowledge when it comes to church history. It was believed that the history of the church began with the meeting of the apostles and presbyters as described in Acts 15:4–9. During this time, they established how Jews and Gentiles should address their relationship with the church and submit to its laws.
There were many conflicts in the church even in the early days in which their principles were ignored as Christianity spread. People in various countries resented the missionaries’ teachings as part of their efforts to colonize these countries, and this resulted in rebellion. Many died and were brutally murdered because of these rebellions. But as time passed, the church slowly regained the people’s trust. The church strongly reminded everyone that people can be won by the message of peace, not war.
In the fourth century, the Council of Chalcedon quarreled about the relationship of God the Father and Jesus Christ, thus Christological controversy arose from various doctrines, including the Word-Flesh and Word-Man Christologies. Both these doctrines coexisted separately, thus the people were divided as a result.
Even though there were many conflicts in the past when it came to what is to be believed and what is the truth, people always found a way to look for something with which they can agree upon, and that was to spread the word of God.
At the beginning of the 20th century, there was an increased expansion of western missionaries, and it was considered as one of the major turning points of the church. It awakened the consciousness of the people about the worldwide extensions of faith adopted by many regional cultures.
Today, even though there are many different branches of Christianisty, people are still strong in their faiths. This is one of the greatest reasons why people have concrete beliefs about the church of Christ. Although the history of the church is not that precise because of the revisions that were made in past, the most important thing is that believers will not hesitate to spread the Word of the Lord, and they are willing to support the advocacies of the church.
What do you think about the church’s growth? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. Talk to me on Twitter and feel free to visit my Facebook and Goodreads page for more discussions. Also, check out my book, The Song of Solomon Revealed.

Song of Solomon: An Inspiring Love Story
The Song of Solomon is a series of romantic poems that are organized as a dialogue between a woman and her lover. The first part of the poem is spoken by the young woman who wants to be with her lover as she kisses her. Like in Proverbs, Psalms, and Lamentations in which the Song of Solomon in the Bible is grouped in the Old Testament, it is poetic in form.
When you hear the poems, there are certain repetitions of sounds, and alliterations are frequently used. Hebrew poetry is rhythmic in thought and in sound in such a way that it balances the themes and the ideas in a structural way just like most of Hebrew poetry.
The primary thought of the Song of Solomon is to celebrate God’s creation. It is also a celebration of the gift of love between man and woman. The presence of this work of poetry is a testimony that God demonstrates the importance of love and commitment. The poem strongly states that God gives importance to human life experiences and promotes love between two people and the commitment of marriage.
In the past, there are certain things about Song of Solomon that are interpreted differently. Both Christians and Jews applied various interpretations of the poems to understand it more clearly. It is interpreted as the love of God for his people. It is also interpreted as the love of Christ for the church, which is described as his bride.
It was also suggested that it was written as a series of songs that were designed to be sung during a wedding feast which would have lasted for a week during the time of King Solomon. This is considered one of the most romantic books in the Old Testament. There are many passionate love songs that were made during the ancient Hebrew times—many of which were written by King Solomon himself—and it is called the “Song of Songs.”
Solomon has written over 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs. This particular romantic book of Solomon captivates people of all generations. This is why the Song of Solomon is still relevant to us up to this day, most especially for couples who love each other.

Bride of Christ: Explained
In your reading of God’s Word, have you ever asked yourself about the bride of Christ? The church is considered to part of the family of God made up of Christians. God the Father considers all the people of the world to be his children. Many consider the church as the bride of Christ, and this belief is held to be the truth based on the strong faith of people.
If you put it as a typical family relationship of marriage between a husband and wife, they are represented by Jesus Christ and the church. This bond is the divine marriage, a relationship for eternity. It has been constituted that the church is the true bride of Christ to strengthen the faith of its followers and believers.
Human marriage is typically a bond between a man and a woman. The reason for this is because they love each other and they want to strengthen their bond. Their role is to take care of and support each other in their respective endeavors. This is the same with Christ and his bride, the church. They need to be united so that the faith of the Christian people will remain strong.
The union between husband and wife is sacred, and so is the bond between Jesus Christ and the church. Husbands love their wives the same way Jesus Christ loves the church and its people. Jesus gave himself to the people of the world, and this is the highest form of sacrifice in the spiritual relationship. As children of Jesus, we and the church should submit ourselves to strengthen our faith and to follow its teachings.
Although this topic is very sensitive and others find it difficult to understand—most especially the non-Christians—the important thing that we should put in our minds is that we should be strong in our faith and beliefs. The term bride of Christ is merely an endearment to distinguish that the church is Jesus Christ’s partner in spreading God’s Word. The church is a representation of Christ, and this bond is sacred to the Christian religion.

A Perspective on the Revelations and the Righteous Path
Since the dawn of mankind, God has always been present in guiding people toward his righteous path. Unfortunately though, a handful of his children remain ignorant to his presence. His influence on mankind can be found in various occasions, such as those as mentioned in 2 Peter 1:20–21:
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (KJV)
From Cain and Abel, to Noah, Abraham, Daniel, Jesus, and the apostles—God has remained a constant pillar for people’s journey to righteousness in the spirit of revelations. The purpose of the revelations of God is stated in Deuteronomy 29:29, which lets us know that the purpose of the revelations is so that we may do his will:
The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
God had touched the mind of Daniel through the Holy Ghost, and we can see God’s influence in Daniel 2:47 when Nebuchadnezzar saw that God had given Daniel the wisdom on how to interpret his dream:
The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
God’s influence is made more apparent nearly six hundred years later in Jesus’s era, whereby his message began to spread among mankind in the form of spoken and written passage. We read this in Matthew 5:17:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
God had blessed Jesus with his knowledge on the righteous path and guided him to fulfill the law of Moses, of a truth Jesus came and lived a righteous life in this flesh. The Word says, “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin (Heb. 4:15, KJV).
This spirit of revelation continued through the disciples, who later became the apostles, as Jesus says in Luke 10:21:
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
The Bible ends with the book of Revelations of the events that should shortly come to pass from John’s day:
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John. (Rev. 1:1)
Knowing the prudent nature of mankind, God granted his blessings unto those with open hearts and ears for they had the purest of faiths and purpose. In granting them with his blessings, he entrusted them to spread the divine revelations throughout mankind in hopes of granting his children eternal peace, which we could read in Matthew 13:16–17:
But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
As such, his knowledge has been passed down for generations for the purpose of bringing fallen man back to him. God has been trying to cultivate mankind’s values through his words. God’s truths have been revealed throughout centuries in the spirit of revelations so that men can walk a righteous and upright life before God.
In hopes of serving the Lord Almighty’s will, I am expressing the revelation that God has given me with the goal of helping others gain a better walk with the Lord. Thus, I present the truths as revealed to me in my book, Song of Solomon Revealed.

The Life of King Solomon of Israel
Kings are remembered in different ways. Some become famous for the things they have done in their reign, while others make a mark through their personal traits. When it comes to wisdom, King Solomon of Israel is recognized as possibly the wisest ruler.
Perhaps the best biography of King Solomon of Israel can be gathered from different Bible verses that describe both his life and his rule. Some of these verses trace his lineage, and it offers a background on why his wisdom became a prominent part of his rule. The scripture in 2 Samuel 16:23 (KJV) reveals a glimpse of this:
And the counsel of Ahithopel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man has inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithopel both with David and with Absalom.
King Solomon was the son of King David and Bathsheba. Ahithopel was the grandfather of Bathsheba, making him Solomon’s great grandfather. At the time of David’s reign, Ahithopel served as his advisor. Ahithopel was himself a very wise man to which the Bible describes his counsel as if one is asking “at the oracle of God.” This suggests that good genes run in Solomon’s family.
Another verse also records the time when Solomon becomes king of Israel. First Kings 1:28–30 recounts this:
Then King David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king. And the king sware, and said, as the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress, even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon they son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
Scripture is also integral in tracing when King Solomon of Israel wrote the Song of Songs. Many scholars believe that the Song of Solomon was written early in the king’s reign, given the number of his harem of 140 women was relatively low at the time. Song of Solomon 6:8 details this total:
There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
In contrast, 1 Kings 11:3 sums King Solomon’s number of women at 1,000 during the final stages of his life. The verse reveals that
he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
The achievements of King Solomon in Israel are also the subject of numerous verses. Second Chronicles 8–9 lists these accomplishments in detail. Part of his wisdom was developing trade relationships with neighboring countries to establish the economic strength of Israel. He also made use of matrimony to build alliances with other nations. There are many other achievements detailed, so one who is interested to learn more about the life King Solomon led could simply turn to scripture.
The Song of Songs is among King Solomon’s notable works in his lifetime. My book, Song of Solomon—Revealed, tries to study the king’s poetry in-depth. Grab a copy. Discovering God’s Revelations
The Bible is said to be man’s guide to living a righteous life. The Holy Book contains the word of God himself, sent through a few gifted men. These men were deemed to have the heart and the eyes to receive the message of God. They were prophets through whom the Lord spoke to his people. They brought the revelations of God to the common people, so they may live in the way that pleases the Lord.
Revelations from God are his way of revealing his will. Expositions about future events are not usually clear. This is why Jesus spoke to multitudes in parables. Ordinary men would not have been able to grasp the teachings if Jesus and the prophets did not adjust their language to suit the understanding of their audience. In Mark 4:11 (KJV), Jesus said, “Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables.”
God revelations also come in the form of the Holy Spirit to guide us in our daily lives. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God reveals his truths and bestows upon us the wisdom to determine right from wrong and live a life that is righteous.
Solomon, the son of David, was known as a wise king. He was one of the prophets, a man to whom God spoke directly to. He was anointed king of Israel at the tender age of twelve and knew nothing about ruling a kingdom. Remembering his father’s advice, he sought the gift of wisdom from the Lord so he may lead God’s great people. God became his confidant, and every decision he made was decided upon through God’s revelations. His reign as king marked the golden age of Israel, as he amassed great wealth and power for his kingdom. Further down the road, however, he strayed from the righteous path and committed sins that displeased the Lord. This led to the downfall of King Solomon and his kingdom.
Revelations are available in the Bible and through the Holy Spirit for all of God’s followers. It is only a matter of opening up one’s mind and heart to receive His message.

Revealing the Meaning Hidden in Bible Poetry
The Bible as Poetry
One of the keys in understanding the Bible more is through learning about Bible poetry. There are several books of poetry in the Bible, such as Job, Psalms, Song of Songs, Lamentations, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon. Just like in other forms of literature, translating poetry is very difficult. What many Biblical scholars do is use parallelism to translate the original Hebrew poems into the English language.
Books of Poetry in the Bible
The five poetical books in the Bible can be classified into themes. The Book of Job talks about blessing and suffering. Praising God through prayer is the central theme in the Psalms. The Proverbs, meanwhile, is about prudence and precept. Verity by the way of vanity is the main topic in Ecclesiastes. Lastly, the Song of Solomon is about the happiness or bliss through union.
Interpreting Poetry from the Bible
If you interpret these books word for word, the real meaning behind these beautiful proses can elude you. Take for example the Song of Solomon. As discussed in my book The Song of Solomon—Revealed, this part of the Bible can be interpreted as natural love or a sexual book. However, Biblical scholars will read the book as a love song between God and His bride, His chosen people.
The Song of Solomon
The Song of Solomon is a spiritual book; it shows how much God love his people. The words and poems expresses a love that is higher than that of earthly sensual nature. However, by understanding the natural meaning first, it will help you see the spiritual meaning of what is written in the scriptures. This expression of higher level of love is what God was doing with Solomon in this book.
The meaning of the poetry from the Bible can only be seen by reading at them in the natural view, but looking at them with spiritual eyes of understanding. Through this parallel method, we find the beauty of the Bible as poetry.
The Song of Solomon is full of allegories. It is a unique book in the Bible because it can be read as a sexual/sensual description of a husband and his bride. However, in spiritual view, it deals with Jesus and his bride, the church. Through studying, we can see that the book has a framework. Each chapter tells something different. In chapter 1, the poetry deals with us, the people, being drawn to the Lord. In the second chapter, the bride, the church, declares her love for Jesus, and Jesus responds at the end of the chapter.
The prophets use poetry to write this because poetry is more effective in impressing itself and its message to the hearer’s or reader’s memory. Poetry also allows the prophets to express God’s will with creativity and beauty. As everything in nature is the expression of God’s beauty, how appropriate then it is to reveal His words in poetry.

The Power of Influence
The power of influence in our daily lives is undeniable. It can happen in the subtlest way like swaying a friend’s choice on food. Or it could manifest in a major way such as the cry of the masses affected by government decisions.
To have a deep understanding of the concept would require accepting that influence is omnipresent, and the Bible is one of its testaments. In my book, The Song of Solomon Revealed, I talk about influence and mention the concept many times.
I bring up influence first on page 33 of my book, which follows my discussion on the Song of Solomon, specifically, Song 1:5–6:
I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon. Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
It is easy to confuse the verse for a negative statement. However, it is the exact opposite. The phrase the sun hath looked upon me describes Jesus’s light and his gospel shining upon us. How we interpret and apply his gospel shape our lives, and that is his greatest influence on us.
Another aspect where I bring up the topic of influence is on page 83 of my book where I bring up Song 2:6: “His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.”
In this case, the right hand represents the ministry of the body while the left hand stands for the ministry of the church. The left hand is the representation of the church’s influence on us. Namely, the church’s teachings impact the way we go about our daily routine, including our thinking process.
The church has the ability to influence even the smallest details of our lives. For example, the church’s impact on our values consequently shapes our daily interactions. It bestows on us personality traits like patience, compassion, and the ability to discern between right and wrong. In other ways, the church as a body of influence can also steer our minds toward our stand on political issues and selecting the people with whom we want to spend time, among others.
Last and most importantly, I discuss Song 2:15 on page 104 of my book: “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.”
These “little foxes” are the mostly neglected things—like sins or offenses—that may get the better of us. I cite one such experience in my book. A few years ago, I was awarded employee of the month, which earned me a regular parking spot. When I was called in early one night, there was already a car parked on my spot. The dew on the car’s back almost tempted me to write “Your name is not Owen.” That temptation was a little fox. I managed to let the situation go after some contemplation, and the person ended up apologizing later.
But why does this story matter in our talk about influence? Aside from God’s influence on us, another important manifestation of the concept is our influence on other people. As Christians, we should always remind ourselves that we have our own circle of influence. Hence, it is our responsibility to uphold our values and not be tempted by little foxes. We should lead by example and influence one another to be better followers of God.
More of my views on the Lord’s influence on us can be found in my book, The Song of Solomon Revealed. Connect with me on my social channels on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads for more on influence.

Keys in the Bible for Understanding God’s Word
Keys of understanding are essential to fully grasp the meaning of the Scriptures. However, the idea of determining these keys can be confusing.
Regular keys unlock rooms, treasure boxes—important things. Similarly, keys in the Bible unlock God’s meaning. To unlock these meanings, one must turn to what is written in the Bible and decipher them.
If you are looking for a more specific example, my book Songs of Solomon Revealed is in itself a type of key to understanding the Bible. A quick read through the text will take readers to some extracts from the Bible, followed by an explanation as to what that chapter or verse signifies.
The first chapter of Songs of Solomon Revealed shows that one of the keys in the Bible are words. In page 16, I share the verse Song 1:2 where the bride says, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.”
Although at face value the word kisses could be understood as literal, it actually expresses a deeper meaning. The Lord “kissing” his people represents the forming of an intimate relationship between man and God.
This interpretation is not merely symbolic. A closer inspection of the word kiss in biblical context led to this association. Notably, the Hebrew word for “kiss” is nashaq, which translates to either “to put together” or “to be equipped with.” Hence, the mention of “kissing” in the Song of Solomon verse has a deeper layer than its literal meaning.
But, one may ask, if there are texts which easily explain the meaning of God’s word, what is the significance of keys in the bible? The answer to that is continuous learning. Although the Scriptures have been around for a very long time, people can still learn something new from them. It could be in the manner of relating it to current events or even uncovering a new idea from the Bible.
Whatever it is, the Bible was written in a manner where some of its parts may be interpreted differently. After all, human understanding has its limitations. With these limitations, finding things like keys to the kingdom in the Bible won’t be easy.
However, aside from words, having the right attitude is also one of the keys to understanding hidden symbols in the Bible. One must be open-minded in learning through others because others may offer a different perspective of the text. Most importantly, one must be able to accept that God may not have revealed everything there is to reveal just yet.
