He had attended the Royal King Faisal school at Sulaymaniyah and was also taught foreign languages by private tutors at an early age. He went on to study political science at Baghdad University.

Nawshirwan Mustafa died in his hometown of Sulaymaniyah on 19 May 2017 and was buried on 20 May 2017. While it hasn't been confirmed, he is thought to have died of lung cancer.
