HAZEL LUSH
is an author of contemporary romance. Drawing from her own desire to be an accomplished and independent woman, Hazel mixes sensuality, feminine fearlessness, and a wry sense of humor to create strong-willed female protagonists and their sexy, devoted lovers.

She has written (under another name) plays, musicals, sitcoms, and a scathing Yelp review of a dentist she truly despised.

Hazel lives in the Hudson Valley where she has a 123 year old farmhouse, a musician husband, and a rescue dog and cat.

I read constantly, so I'm always triggered by little moments and scenes in books I enjoy. Sometimes even the style of a book gets me excited. I just devoured Dracula, and now I have a strong urge to write an epistolary novel, but who knows if that will happen?

Apart from books, I'm inspired frequently by nature. I live in a bustling city (NYC), so getting out into nature is very restorative for me. The sights and the smells and sounds, the wildlife, the different colors all can spark an idea for a story, so I wind up taking a lot of photographs when one of those moments strikes, so I can look back and remember that visceral reaction.(less)

I'll then force myself to write until I hit that moment. Maybe what I write isn't great, but I will have covered some ground, and I can see what I did in order to make it clearer and better in my rewrites. Writing is rewriting, after all.(less)

“Swiftboating enters the English language as a verb that means attacking strength instead of weakness. In feminist and other social justice contexts, this has long been called trashing, attacking leaders for daring to write, speak, or lead at all. Taking away the good is even more lethal than pointing out the bad. p.189”

“Even the dictionary defines adventurer as “a person who has, enjoys, or seeks adventures,” but adventuress is “a woman who uses unscrupulous means in order to gain wealth or social position.”

“I was the only “girl writer,” probably because the power to make people laugh is also a power, so women have been kept out of comedy. Polls show that what women fear most from men is violence, and what men fear most from women is ridicule. Later, when Tina Fey was head writer and star of Saturday Night Live, she could still say, “Only in comedy does an obedient white girl from the suburbs count as diversity.”
