I've been a teacher all my life, so I guess it's natural that I write about teachers. Now that I think about it, it's natural for me to write because both of my parents were writers.

My first efforts were short stories about the goings-on inside the faculty lounge of a high school. They were easy to write since I spent a lot of my time there. They are fiction, but clearly based on my experiences. Several of these "Faculty Lounge Stories" are archived on my website,

Personal Pronouns started with the same setting I used in the short stories, but morphed into something else as I wrote it. The length of the novel allowed me to flesh out the characters and hopefully give them some depth. The plot begins in school b

I am currently working on the second book, "Indirect Objects." In some sense "IO" will be a sequel, but I believe it will also stand on its own.
I hope to have the editing completed this summer and to release it shortly thereafter.(less)

Written several years ago, but it works in today's political climate perfectly.
I loved the asides and references to Penny's Gamache novels. Lots of tough, empowered women!

Fredrik Backman
“To love someone is like moving into a house," Sonja used to say. "At first you fall in love in everything new, you wonder every morning that this is one's own, as if they are afraid that someone will suddenly come tumbling through the door and say that there has been a serious mistake and that it simply was not meant to would live so fine. But as the years go by, the facade worn, the wood cracks here and there, and you start to love this house not so much for all the ways it is perfect in that for all the ways it is not. You become familiar with all its nooks and crannies. How to avoid that the key gets stuck in the lock if it is cold outside. Which floorboards have some give when you step on them, and exactly how to open the doors for them not to creak. That's it, all the little secrets that make it your home.”
Fredrik Backman, A Man Called Ove

Erika Johansen
“Even a book can be dangerous in the wrong hands, and when that happens, you blame the hands, but you also read the book.”
Erika Johansen, The Queen of the Tearling

M.L. Stedman
“History is that which is agreed upon by mutual consent.”
ML Stedman, The Light Between Oceans

Amor Towles
“—It wasn’t a bother at all, the old gent replied, gesturing toward his bed. I was only reading. Ah, I thought, seeing the corner of the book poking out from the folds of his sheets. I should have known. The poor old chap, he suffers from the most dangerous addiction of all.”
Amor Towles, The Lincoln Highway
