A Year in Chawton - July

Jeremy Knight shares his memories of July in Chawton on this family’s ancestral estate where Jane Austen lived and wrote – and Jane was never more celebrated than in July.

"When I was a child July was the start of the long summer holidays and I often had a friend from school to stay in Chawton. We spent our days out and about in the garden and woods. At the start of the summer the large swimming pool on the edge of the lawns would be filled – it took about 3 days and another week to warm up en...

A year in Chawton - June

Jeremy Knight (Edward Austen's third great grandson), shares his memories of over forty years living at Chawton House on the ancestral estate where Jane Austen herself lived and wrote, with the month of June.

“When I was a boy I would normally be away at school in June and miss the seasonal changes. I looked forward to July when term would end and I could go home for the summer holidays.

A year in Chawton - May

Jeremy Knight (Edward Austen's third great grandson), shares his memories of over forty years living at Chawton House on the ancestral estate where Jane Austen herself lived and wrote, with the month of May.

"I have always loved being outdoors.  As a child I spent a lot of time in almost all weathers roaming the grounds, climbing trees, inventing games and observing nature.

I learnt when the chicks were hatching and in May the parent birds busily searched for food - caterpillars, moth larvae a...

A year in Chawton - April

Jeremy Knight (Edward Austen's third great grandson), shares his memories of over forty years living at Chawton House on the ancestral estate where Jane Austen herself lived and wrote, with the month of April.

'On Easter Sunday, the resident family would get together and my mother would provide the most wonderful roast lunch for all twelve of us to eat the Great Hall.  As well as my wife and our two children, the twelve included my parents, Edward and Elizabeth Knight, my younger brother Rober...

A year in Chawton - March

Jeremy Knight (Edward Austen's third great grandson), shares his memories of over forty years living at Chawton House on the ancestral estate where Jane Austen herself lived and wrote, with the month of March.

"Spring at last - so cheering after the long cold winter at the manor. The days became noticeably longer, brighter and warmer. Some years we still got snowfall in March, sometimes lots of sunshine.

The snowdrops were still plentiful and the daffodils were fully out, with great swathes of...

Austen Knight family fun in the snow

As the Chawton estate is covered in snow, Caroline Jane Knight, Jane Austen’s fifth great niece and the last Austen descendent to grow up on the ancestral estate where Jane herself lived and wrote, remembers the excitement of snowfall when Chawton House was her family’s home.

"I have such strong memories of Chawton in the snow, it was so exciting! My father, Jeremy Knight (Edward Austen’s 3rd great grandson) was always first up in the morning so was usually the first to know. “You might want t...

A year in Chawton - February

In the second part of 'A Year in Chawton' by Jeremy Knight, Jane Austen’s fourth great nephew who lived at Chawton House for over forty years, shares his memories of February.

“February could be very miserable.  By now we were all fed up with the winter damp and darkness, but with the days getting lighter I could at least get out for a short walk each day after work. My usual walk was up the lawn, to the walled garden then through the woods, the wilderness and back to the house via the back en...

Chawton House - so much more than a library

Chawton House Library have announced a change of name for the Knight family ancestral home, once owned by Jane Austen's brother Edward (my fourth great grandfather).

“Having previously been known as Chawton House Library due to our significant collection of early women’s writing, we are shortening our name to Chawton House. Our amazing library collection will still be at the core of what we do but we have had lots of feedback to say that potential visitors to the house and grounds are confused...

Jeremy Knight, Edward Austen’s 3rd great grandson, lived at Chawton House for over 40 years, while it was still the ancestral home of the Austen Knight family.  In this article, Jeremy shares his memories of January in Chawton.

"We always saw in the New Year with friends, often with a dinner party at Chawton House. The house had been decorated with decorations for Christmas, which we would take down by Twelfth Night, the 6th January.

My wife, Carol, with our children, Paul and Caroline, in the Great Hall - 1971

Janeites revive a lost Christmas tradition of Jane Austen’s family

Sir Richard Knight’s reclining statue had been in the back of the church for 300 years, so great-aunt Jane Austen would have known him as well as I did. I lived at Chawton House until I was 18 and every year on Christmas Eve I took the short walk half way down the front drive to Chawton Church to see Sir Richard and check he had his holly. This family tradition was lost when my family left Chawton but, thanks to the wonderful Janeite community, has now been revived.

I liked the stillness of th...
