I have two elder sisters and a twin brother who is much quieter than me and with much longer legs. Our Dad was in the Foreign Office so we spent our childhood living in far-flung places like Shanghai and Stockholm. In fact, until the age of 32 I had never spent more than 3 years under the same roof...it's left me with the opposite of 'itchy feet'.
I fell in love with writing aged 11 when my class was asked to write a ghost story - that thrill of being able to make it all up! Studying English at Oxford was a dream come true, but then real life got in the way and I started a career in advertising, climbing the greasy pole for four years, helping sell washing powder and cold remedies.
Aged 25, I got the chance to go and live in Argentina. I left

Dear Emma,
If you are new to writing then the fear of what might come out if you start is completely understandable. Writing, by its nature, can be self-exposing, because at heart we have only our own experiences as our starting points, though in the best novels those experiences are transformed into new and separate truths by the creative power of the imagination.
My suggestion to you would be to plan in as much detail as you can your character(s) and your story-line before you start, so as to create a sense of control and distance. Then when you begin to write always remember that you are the Story-Teller with a job to do, and that job is to keep the narrative moving along and to entertain and enthrall your reader as you go. In other words you are in control of your material rather than the other way round. Moments of revelation and inspiration may strike along the way, but they will be good and exciting, helping you to see that you have nothing to fear.
Good luck,

A Shattered Soul

I didn’t want to read Paul Lynch’s Booker Prize winner, ‘Prophet Song’, because an eminent critic called it ‘soul-shattering’ and I don’t need my soul shattered, thank you very much. But then someone gave me a copy for Christmas, and after gathering dust in my TBR pile I thought, okay then, let’s give it a go. Because a book can always be closed, right? If you don’t like how it is written, or if i Read more of this blog post »
