Michael Barsa grew up in a German-Syrian household in New Jersey and spoke no English until he went to school. So began an epic struggle to master the American "R" and a lifelong fascination with language. He's lived on three continents and spent many summers in southern Germany and southern Vermont.

He's worked as an award-winning grant writer, an English teacher, and an environmental lawyer. He now teaches environmental and natural resources law. His scholarly articles have appeared in several major law reviews, and his writing on environmental policy has appeared in The Chicago Tribune and The Chicago Sun-Times. His short fiction has appeared in Sequoia and Underland Arcana.

The Garden of Blue Roses is his first novel.

Because my advice is just to write, write, and write some more. You'll produce lots of bad writing, but that's OK. Everybody does. You just need to work through the bad writing to get to the good.(less)

Shirley Jackson
“My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood. I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance. I have often thought that with any luck at all, I could have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both my hands are the same length, but I have had to be content with what I had. I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise. I like my sister Constance, and Richard Plantagenet, and Amanita phalloides, the death-cup mushroom. Everyone else in our family is dead.”

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream.”

Shirley Jackson
“Journeys end in lovers meeting; I have spent an all but sleepless night, I have told lies and made a fool of myself, and the very air tastes like wine. I have been frightened half out of my foolish wits, but I have somehow earned this joy; I have been waiting for it for so long.”
Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House

William Faulkner
“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.”

Thank you, Aloha, for accepting my invitation! I'm excited to hear what you think about Walser. I have Jakob Von Gunten in a NYRB reissue, but I haven't read it yet. And I agree, walking is a wonderful way to escape, if only into your own mind. It's actually my favorite way of encountering and exploring a new city--to walk until I get lost, then see what I find.

message 20: by Aloha

Aloha Hi Michael,

Thank you for the invite. I am excited about Walser. I owned several of his work but was focused on other authors at that time. Reading Microscripts made me look deeper into his life. What a fascinating man. I ordered The Walk for personal reasons. I walk alone mostly for the same reasons he walk alone. I walk to feel freedom from all the shackles life can put on you.

Hi Puck--thanks so much for this recommendation! The Butcher's Hook looks amazing, and your review was wonderful. I will order it up right away. I see we're both drawn to these unbalanced, unreliable narrators! When they work, they work so well.

message 6: by Puck

Puck Hi Michael, thank you for your friend-request! I'm looking forward on sharing some good gothic and literary horror books with you. Since you recommended Shirley Jackson to me (and what a wonderful recommendation!), I'd like to recommend to you The Butcher's Hook.

It's an historical-fiction novel, more on the psychological suspense side than horror, but the line is thin. Here is my review of the book to give you an impression, but since you seem to like unbalanced main characters like Eleanor Vance, I think you'll like this book too :)

Michael Looks wonderful, Megan! Thanks for letting me know!
