Wonderfully ridiculous and random, this story somehow manages to creep past the normal levels of disbelief I hold even for an obviously outrageous book and delivers a story that kept me both enthralled and giggling right up until the very last page.

"The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared" is exactly what it promises to be, the story of a hundred-year-old man who climbs out of the window and disappears. However, it is so much more than this as well. What this story is actually about is yet another adventure in the hundred-year life of a man who has gone from one adventure to the next since he was 10 years old and had figured out how to use explosives.

Both the back story of the old man and his current adventure are fascinating and very funny making this one of the more enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

Overall this is a great read filled with a protagonist it is impossible not to love and is so well written that it is more than easy to overlook the obvious impossibility of the events. I can happily recommend this book to any and all readers looking for a good read.

After reading this book for a second time 10 years (nearly 11) after I last read this novel, I am compelled to lower the rating of this book by 1 star. The above review does hold true for this book for the most part, but on this re-read it was less compelling than I originally thought.

Part of the reason for this is that much of what makes this book interesting is the novelty of reading about the events in this story for the first time. The other part of the reason is that, since reading this book last, I now realise it is basically a lesser version of Forrest Gump in novel form. Everything that is good about the format of this book, that movie already did much better, especially in how that movie chose to deal with the historical events Forrest got caught up in. The ways in which Forrest influenced history were mostly harmless, whereas "harmless" is far from the adjective I would use to describe the impact this protagonist has on history. The actions this protagonists make have a very real body count (literally thousands if not hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions depending on how you interpret his actions in this book). This body count undercuts the humour that is otherwise driving the story.

Finally, I felt that the modern-day storyline wasn't all that compelling and almost felt like it belonged in a different book. The protagonist's backstory had very little to do with the current-day storyline other than the protagonist being a part of it, making the two stories being told here feel quite disconnected.

Overall it's still a good read, but it was far from the kind of quality that I consider worthy of 5-star reviews. ...more

I picked up this book after my interest in basketball was rekindled after a long hiatus over the last few years. After diving deep into the modern game, I have started going back to the era that got me interested in basketball in the first place and I picked up this book after my interest in basketball was rekindled after a long hiatus over the last few years. After diving deep into the modern game, I have started going back to the era that got me interested in basketball in the first place and have spent the better part of the last 3-6 months watching videos about MJ on YouTube and, of course, The Last Dance. After finishing that brilliant documentary, but knowing from my YouTube journey that it missed some context/detail on specific events, I thought this book might be worth reading.

On the one hand, it definitely adds a lot more detail, but unfortunately, it's not in a good way. I'll be honest here, I couldn't finish this book... in fact, I struggled to get more than 20% into it. The author definitely adds more detail, but now he goes too far in the wrong direction, where he doesn't edit out the details that aren't relevant to the narrative. However, beyond this, the key issue here, as with so many books of late, is that the author is more interested in social politics than in the subject matter he is writing about.

This book starts three generations before MJ's birth, a decision that has clearly been made only so the author could tie Michael Jordan's story back to the dark periods of black American history. He also never misses an opportunity, no matter how thin, to try to accentuate any form of racial tensions that might have existed in MJ's story. The thing is, outside of a single throwaway comment from MJ about someone once calling him the N-word when he was younger, every single instance is a stretch, supported only by cherry-picked comments that are referenced without actually being cited or quoted in the text.

As usual, when I raise the issue of race-baiting in books like this, I am not saying there isn't racism in the world, nor even that it wasn't a part of MJ's story. But after months of researching the man, I have learnt about someone who is a fascinating human being, not just a fascinating black person. His race hasn't ever come into any of the stories I have heard about him until this book. While I certainly haven't seen every interview he has ever given nor listened to every story about the man there is to hear, I have never seen MJ say anything race-related himself, but have only ever seen other people say race-related commentary on his behalf.

In today's politicised world, I am fed up with people trying to shoehorn this stuff into absolutely everything, no matter how thin the connection, and that is how I felt going into this book. I came here to read about the exceptional human being Michael Jordan, who has always been a hero/idol of mine, but I left because the author clearly has an agenda in how he presents that story. It's the writing of someone who desperately wants to portray a narriative in a certain light, and is forcing the facts to fit his conclusion rather than the other way around. It makes it hard to trust him as an author.

Beware of Chicken is one of those rare stories that rarely does anything I don't like, leading to a string of 5-star reviews from this reader. Therefore, it is strange in a series without misses for me to make the statement that this is a "return to form" or that it might be one of the "best yet". However, both of those statements do kind of ring true for me.

I think the key reason is that this series has grown in scope far beyond what it originally promised. What started as the story of Jin as he sets up his farm and creates a little spot of paradise for himself turns into a grand story with tens of viewpoint characters that leads the narrative far from that original premise. In the hands of a less talented writer, this might spell doom for any other series. However, if there is one thing CasualFarmer does better than almost any author I have ever read, it is crafting characters I genuinely care about. This means that even when we are not spending time with Jin, we are spending time with a growing cast of characters who are having adventures that matter to me because those characters matter to me. They are all fascinating in their own right... But they are not the story of Jin...

Which leads me right back to why I enjoyed this outing so much; it firmly brings the narrative back to the central premise that kicked this series off in the first place.

Gramps is on his way to the farm to see what his grandson has been doing in his absence, and through that reunion, we get to delve deeper into Jin's goals, into where his story is leading him and us as readers. As much as I've loved spending time with the extended cast of characters in previous novels, returning to this core premise is a welcome gift to this reader, which is why this instalment stands out as one of the best so far.

One final reflection on this story is the difference between the quality of the finished novel vs the web novel. I haven't compared them side by side in detail, so I don't know whether it is the power of a polishing edit or simply Travis Baldree's masterful narration bringing this story to life, but these audiobooks feel like a genuine improvement over the web novel. It's why, even after reading ahead in the web series, I so look forward to each new release.

In this book, Mark has been framed for murder and thrown into a mysterious underground prison. It's a place with a completely new societal structure to learn about, yet more new characters to develop, and yet more mysteries to uncover. In what is starting to drive me up the wall, Mark doesn't seem to care that he has been framed for murder, showing his usual idiotic lack of curiosity about why he is in such a situation, and instead just goes with the flow. Unfortunately, in this case, going with the flow means becoming a ruthless killer and almost completely changing his character in the process.

So if it's such a departure from what we have before, why 4 stars? Simply because, despite the above major issues, I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this story.

Once again, this new scenario forces Mark to develop his powers further and find new ways to thrive, setting him truly on the path to becoming an OP protagonist. I am a sucker for that kind of storyline, and while I was majorly frustrated that this story couldn't settle enough to tell a single story, the new story told in this book was a lot of fun to read about.

That said, I'm still debating dropping this star rating back to 3 because this book is really uneven. I found the opening half fascinating and was intrigued with where the story was taking us, but then mid-story, it changes up again, abandoning everything set up to that point to take us down another new path, which again might have been an enjoyable path, but I wanted to see how the first story unfolded first before starting on a different journey.

My final gripe is the Mark-Noah friendship. This relationship hasn't had nearly the development it needed to be such a significant driving factor of the conflict in these stories. Noah has barely even been in books two and three, and certainly not in any friendly situation. It feels like a relationship that needs to exist so the rest of the story can happen, but one that hasn't actually been earned.

Overall, I did enjoy this one, as I have enjoyed all three books in this series so far. It is doing just enough right that I can't bring myself to give this one just three stars, especially as I am really interested in seeing what happens next, but I do have major reservations with this series.

Ideally, in future books we can:
1. Start developing existing storylines rather than continually creating new ones.
2. Develop existing relationships rather than continually introduce new characters.
3. Have Mark actually start showing some natural curiosity about his powers and the mystery in his life, rather than simply just going with the flow in a state of purposeful moronic ignorance. ...more

This book uses a twist of fate to abandon the training academy storyline and take Mark out of the city, away from all the other characters introduced in the first book. This means that rather than expanding on the storylines and relationships from the first book and naturally progressing and developing them, we are instead thrust into a new scenario with new storylines and new characters to get to know. The plot threads introduced in the first book are forgotten enough to feel jarring, and the side characters from the first book are abandoned long enough that when they appear again, there is no emotional impact because they are clearly not important enough for the story to care about not abandoning them for a whole book at a time.

The only real continued forward progression any storyline from the first book gets is the development of Mark's powers, and this was a little frustrating as well. On the one hand, it is good to see them develop at quite a quick pace (the one positive of his being in this new environment). However, on the other hand, it is frustrating that Mark still shows a distinct lack of curiosity about uncovering the mysteries around them. It is the plot that forces Mark to improve with his powers, and not his own agency. You would think, considering the surprising ways that his powers are unfolding, that he might want to explore those mysteries a little more, but once more, they are all but forgotten when the plot needs him to stop caring about them and move on again.

Overall, I still enjoyed this story, but it wasn't nearly so solidly written as the first book in this series. It hasn't done enough wrong to make me want to stop reading, but it did leave more quite frustrated a lot at how this story is developing.
