For this reader the answer is yes, but I would completely understand how some people might have some issues with this book.

This is less of a self contained story/adventure like most books in this series, but instead the chronicles of the year following the Battle of Chicago in which Harry must face the fallout of what happened there. I could practically feel how difficult this must have been to write as Jim Butcher needed to somehow give the consequences of Battleground the weight they deserve while also not bog the reader down with a melancholy story that isn't any fun at all.

I feel like the task was accomplished though and I enjoyed the story we got. This won't go down as my favourite Dresden book by any means, but there is a lot here too like:

1. The story continues to evolve Dresden's character and the overarching plot to bigger and better things. It's been clear for a while that big things are coming and Dresden has an important part to play in those events, and it's nice to see Harry finally accept that and move towards it rather than constantly fighting for the status quo.

2. I love that for the first time in this series Harry's friends actually push back on his self blame rather than reinforce it. This has always been a flaw in this series and I love that Harry is no longer the whipping boy for everyone in his life (with maybe one notable exception in Thomas).

3. Even after a 5 year hiatus, Jim Butcher can still write the hell out of these characters and this book fits right at home in the series like we never left.

Overall it's great to be back, and I hope it's not going to be another 5 years before we get the next book. Personally I would like this book to be a one and done regarding the recovery from what Harry lost. It was important to see it as it was a major loss, but this book has done a great job of wrapping that up and I would like to see where this series can go without this holding it back (something I assumed was the reason for the loss in the first place). ...more

It's a shame because, as Clarkson's Farm shows all too well, this is a lesson Jeremy Clarkson knows. That show wouldn't be nearly the masterpiece it is if each season didn't tell a complete story, and each season as a whole weren't part of a larger narrative. Season one is the story of taking an out of his depth newby farmer through to his first harvest. The second season chronicles the adventures of setting up a restaurant to create a new, profitable enterprise whilst battling the antagonist, Oxfordshire West Council. Season 3 was a competition-based story about traditional farming versus farming the unfarmed, exploring new avenues for generating income in today's modern farming world. The fourth season was about the trials of creating a quintessentially British pub, with not a single part of it that showcasing anything from outside of Great Britain. All four seasons are part of a larger narrative around a man who started farming on a whim and became passionate about championing the larger cause of the British farming industry.

This storytelling element is what separates a traditional documentary series from viral, can't-miss television, and it's an element missing from this book.

Beyond that, if you have seen Clarkson's farm, there's not much more to get from this book than what you got there. There might be a little extra context for a few moments in the series, but it's not so much as to make this a must-read book.

Overall, as previously mentioned, this book is exactly what it says on the tin. It's a collection of articles about farming and nothing more. I can't really mark it down for that (so I can't go any lower than 3-stars), but I also can't go higher than that rating as this book doesn't engage you as a good book should. This book is definitely in the first camp, which is a massive shame because it is only in this last book that this story has given a genuine hint of just where this series could have gone.

Over the years, I have struggled with this series as it, in turn, has struggled with itself. The core premise of this story has been where this series has shone, a vampire whose strengths lie as far away from traditional vampire strengths as imaginable. The stories where Fred uses those strengths (his accountancy skills, analytical mind, and an over developed doogooder personality) have always been the best of this series. They are the ones that stepped furthest away from the tropes of this stale genre and carried the series to new heights. It forced the author to be genuinely creative to create interesting tales from non-traditional stories, and they shone all the brighter for it.

However, set against that core premise were the tropes of the vampire/paranormal genre that the author couldn't help but lean on a bit too often. Whether from a genuine desire to write that sort of story, a lack of faith in his core premise being enough to maintain reader interest in the series, or some other reason, this series has fallen back into the action based tropes of the genre a few times too many to the point where unfortunately the core premise had to take a back seat to the more traditional story of a protagonist needing to get strong enough to protect everything he holds dear.

I was sad to see the back of what I felt was the superior angle of this story, but the author's talent was such that I knew he could still deliver something great if he committed to the new direction. Unfortunately, it is only in this last book that we get that commitment, and it is only here where we catch a glimpse of what this series could have become.

As with the books preceding this, this is an anthology of shorter stories. Two of these stories stood out the most. One explores the origins of the vampire species and very much sets up the potential Fred has to grow into, while laying at his feet a task of epic scope that could launch an entirely new series of much grander books. The second story, for lack of a better word, is the "climax" of this series, and sees Fred finally use the lessons he has learnt in the previous book to attempt to bring a permanent end to his oldest rivalry in this series. These stores were epic, gripping, and finally embraced the new direction this series desperately needed. The result is fascinating reading that keeps the pages turning at speed, and sadly was over too fast.

So as I turn the last pages of this book, I am left with a bittersweet feeling. Joy at seeing this series finally settle into the story it had promised to be for a number of books now, happiness that this was a great ending to this chapter in Fred's life, but frustration that this is also the end of the story, just at the time when the author was opening up the story for much bigger and better things to come.

I don't know if Drew Hayes plans to return to this universe and tell that much larger story, so for now I will just have to settle for and be happy with the fact that this is the first of those two options for story endings; a story that leaves you wanting more. ...more

Addiction as a topic is one that I often shy away from reading about. There is a level of self-destruction inherent in stories of addiction that makes me uncomfortable (no doubt because I am a little too prone to self-destructive habits myself). So, normally, this is not the sort of book I would pick up, and I only did so this time because I am a fan of the author.

I have followed Gary from Nerdrotic for a number of years now, both on his channel and on many of the other channels he frequents, even catching many guest appearances on podcasts I might not normally watch. The reason for this is that over the years, I have found Gary to be someone I greatly admire. He is authentic, honest, open, and incredibly loyal to the people he cares about. He seemingly never misses an opportunity to support a friend, to give credit and free promotion to other creators, and to give his time to his followers online. This admiration led to curiosity about his past, which is why I picked up this book... and I'm really glad I did.

As expected, this is an open and honest accounting of his life before YouTube, focusing on the topics that most of us would rather hide than write a book about. What I didn't expect was just how well written this book was.

I don't mean that as an insult, implying that I didn't think Gary could write a book, but rather as a genuine compliment from someone who reads hundreds of books a year. I guess it comes from a lifetime of consuming stories in all forms, but Gary has a grasp of story structure that many authors (especially first-time authors) simply don't. The pacing is on point, the writing style is easy to read and engaging, and the emotionally impactful moments land exactly as planned. There might be some minor improvement needed in the line editing towards the second half of the book, as maybe some of the chapters there weren't quite as tightly written as the first half of the story, but that's really nitpicking more than anything substantive to hold against this book.

The content of this book is genuinely engaging as well. This isn't a case of a small bit of story being stretched out over too many pages to cash in on some YouTube fame. Gary has genuinely lived a fascinating life, and if anything, you get the impression from reading this that what you are getting is just the tip of the iceberg. The anecdotes are genuinely worthy of being included in a book like this.

Over all of that, though, maybe the biggest praise that I can give this book is that it never buries the lead. This is a story about addiction, and it never forgets that. Every anecdote from the beginning to the end is curated to support that message. Whether talking about substance abuse directly, speaking of the consequences directly, exploring the consequences indirectly, or exploring some topics of his sober life to set up the stakes for what he might lose should he relapse again, there is not a wasted paragraph in this book that is not in service to the story being told. This leads to a book that is never confused about what it is supposed to be, never feels slow or boring, and one that I couldn't put down.

Overall, this was an excellent read beyond just what I got from it as a fan of the author. There's a fascinating insight into the life of an addict, a cautionary tale about the consequences of substance abuse, and some important lessons about the path to recovery. But most importantly to me, there is an inspiring story of how, no matter how low life gets, with some hard work and dedication, you can always climb back out on the other side and go on to bigger and better things. With our world the way it is right now, and personally with my life the way it is right now, this was the kind of story I needed to read at the start of 2026.

"The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared" is exactly what it promises to be, the story of a hundred-year-old man who climbs out of the window and disappears. However, it is so much more than this as well. What this story is actually about is yet another adventure in the hundred-year life of a man who has gone from one adventure to the next since he was 10 years old and had figured out how to use explosives.

Both the back story of the old man and his current adventure are fascinating and very funny making this one of the more enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

Overall this is a great read filled with a protagonist it is impossible not to love and is so well written that it is more than easy to overlook the obvious impossibility of the events. I can happily recommend this book to any and all readers looking for a good read.

** Update - 29th December 2025 **
After reading this book for a second time 10 years (nearly 11) after I last read this novel, I am compelled to lower the rating of this book by 1 star. The above review does hold true for this book for the most part, but on this re-read it was less compelling than I originally thought.

Part of the reason for this is that much of what makes this book interesting is the novelty of reading about the events in this story for the first time. The other part of the reason is that, since reading this book last, I now realise it is basically a lesser version of Forrest Gump in novel form. Everything that is good about the format of this book, that movie already did much better, especially in how that movie chose to deal with the historical events Forrest got caught up in. The ways in which Forrest influenced history were mostly harmless, whereas "harmless" is far from the adjective I would use to describe the impact this protagonist has on history. The actions this protagonists make have a very real body count (literally thousands if not hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions depending on how you interpret his actions in this book). This body count undercuts the humour that is otherwise driving the story.

Finally, I felt that the modern-day storyline wasn't all that compelling and almost felt like it belonged in a different book. The protagonist's backstory had very little to do with the current-day storyline other than the protagonist being a part of it, making the two stories being told here feel quite disconnected.

Overall it's still a good read, but it was far from the kind of quality that I consider worthy of 5-star reviews. ...more

I picked up this book after my interest in basketball was rekindled after a long hiatus over the last few years. After diving deep into the modern game, I have started going back to the era that got me interested in basketball in the first place and have spent the better part of the last 3-6 months watching videos about MJ on YouTube and, of course, The Last Dance. After finishing that brilliant documentary, but knowing from my YouTube journey that it missed some context/detail on specific events, I thought this book might be worth reading.

On the one hand, it definitely adds a lot more detail, but unfortunately, it's not in a good way. I'll be honest here, I couldn't finish this book... in fact, I struggled to get more than 20% into it. The author definitely adds more detail, but now he goes too far in the wrong direction, where he doesn't edit out the details that aren't relevant to the narrative. However, beyond this, the key issue here, as with so many books of late, is that the author is more interested in social politics than in the subject matter he is writing about.

This book starts three generations before MJ's birth, a decision that has clearly been made only so the author could tie Michael Jordan's story back to the dark periods of black American history. He also never misses an opportunity, no matter how thin, to try to accentuate any form of racial tensions that might have existed in MJ's story. The thing is, outside of a single throwaway comment from MJ about someone once calling him the N-word when he was younger, every single instance is a stretch, supported only by cherry-picked comments that are referenced without actually being cited or quoted in the text.

As usual, when I raise the issue of race-baiting in books like this, I am not saying there isn't racism in the world, nor even that it wasn't a part of MJ's story. But after months of researching the man, I have learnt about someone who is a fascinating human being, not just a fascinating black person. His race hasn't ever come into any of the stories I have heard about him until this book. While I certainly haven't seen every interview he has ever given nor listened to every story about the man there is to hear, I have never seen MJ say anything race-related himself, but have only ever seen other people say race-related commentary on his behalf.

In today's politicised world, I am fed up with people trying to shoehorn this stuff into absolutely everything, no matter how thin the connection, and that is how I felt going into this book. I came here to read about the exceptional human being Michael Jordan, who has always been a hero/idol of mine, but I left because the author clearly has an agenda in how he presents that story. It's the writing of someone who desperately wants to portray a narriative in a certain light, and is forcing the facts to fit his conclusion rather than the other way around. It makes it hard to trust him as an author.
