Review of "Sex and Rage" by Eve Babitz
Sex & Rage: Advice to Young Ladies Eager for a Good Time by Eve BabitzMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
I loved everything about this book, from the hot-pink cover of the edition I bought to the smart-party-girl hi-jinks and L.A. decadence inside. I loved the author's voice and vivid descriptions--I even love that I happened upon this book on the London "book barge," bought it because I knew the title would make my husband laugh, and then ended up enjoying it far more than I expected to.
The ups and downs of a party girl turned writer hold an obvious appeal for me, and this book didn't disappoint. I also liked that it explored the inevitable hangovers--literal and figurative--of the party lifestyle in a way that did justice to issues of addiction and burn-out without making the whole thing feel like a preachy "very special episode" for even a second.
Make time for this one before the summer's officially over. You won't find better poolside reading--or a book that just looks better in your beach bag (assuming you get the same edition I did). Can't wait to move on to "Eve's Hollywood"!
