Some of my books are under Fraser Sherman because I never thought the use of my middle initial would matter.

Personal stuff? I was born in England, spent most of my life in Florida, moved to Durham NC when I fell in love — and yes, it worked out great

War should not be a stage for Hegseth and the Toddler president to strut upon

Pete Hegseth: “We’re playing for keeps. Our warfighters have maximum authorities granted personally by the president and yours truly. Our rules of engagement are bold, precise, and designed to unleash American power, not shackle it. This was never meant to be a fair fight, and it is not a fair fight. We are punching them while they’re down, which is exactly how it should be.”

Actually the purpose o

I'm a fan of Thorne Smith's cheerfully anarchic fantasies in which (typically) a respectable middle-class man smothering under the weight of his own respectability gets yanked into chaos and fun by a supernatural manifestation. This, Smith's first no ...more

When I was a teen, granola was a funky new kind of cereal popular with hippies. I never heard of tofu until I was in college. Processed food (cheese slices, Campbell's soup, cake mixes) defined American cuisine (not that they've gone away). "There's ...more

This late-1990s book portrays Los Angeles and much of the surrounding area as a train wreck: billions of dollars in an environment prone to earthquakes, tornadoes, wildlife attacks and wildfires, with vulnerabilities the state's politics makes worse. ...more

Two stars may be charitable.
When I read Jack Kirby's work in this era (mid-1970s) I couldn't figure out why people gushed about him. Now that I've read more of his earlier stuff, I appreciate him; still, none of his Marvel Bronze Age output other th

4.5 stars. This retelling of The Land of Oz has great art and the changes to the story are mostly well-executed. I do miss the gryphon/sawhorse race though.
