Attention baseball fans!

I'm proud to announce the publication of my latest book, Last Ride of the Iron Horse. The book tells the tale of baseball great Lou Gehrig's final year in the lineup of the New York Yankees, as he struggled with the early effects of the fatal disease ALS.

For much of the 1938 season, the legendary Gehrig -- dubbed the Iron Horse for his strength and reliability -- struggled with slumps and a mystifying loss of power. Fans booed and sportswriters called for him to be benched. Then, as the Yankees battled for the pennant in August, Lou began pounding home runs like his old self -- a turnaround that in retrospect looks truly miraculous. It may have been a rare case of temporary ALS reversal.

Packed from page one with newly-unearthed information, the book chronicles Gehrig's roller coaster of a year. He survived a car crash. He co-starred in a Hollywood movie. He signed for baseball's highest salary. He pushed his renowned consecutive games streak past the 2,000 mark. He battled injuries that would sideline a lesser man. He played in his final World Series. And late in the year, he entered the political realm for the first time, denouncing the rising threat of Nazism.

The book also tackles questions that have long intrigued Gehrig fans. When did he sense something was wrong with his body? What were the first signs? How did he adjust? And did he still help the Yankees win the championship, even as his skills declined?

The book is published by Sunbury Press. To order, click on the link above or go to Amazon.

Remembering Lou Gehrig

Thursday is the 80th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's iconic speech: "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth."

But he spoke on other occasions too. In the 12 months before, he denounced Nazism, urged Americans to rally against polio, and talked about baseball's importance in turbulent times. You can read about it in "Last Ride of the Iron Horse," published by Sunbury Press, on sale now.

Gehrig book on WFAN

Thanks to Ed Randall for having me on his WFAN radio show, and for his thumbs-up on my Lou Gehrig book, "Last Ride of the Iron Horse." As Ed noted, it's amazing that Gehrig was able to play his final 1938 season while in the early throes of ALS, the disease that would take his life less than three years later.

Medical paper based on Gehrig book

Just published! A medical paper looking at Lou Gehrig's possible temporary ALS reversal in 1938. Dr. Richard Bedlack of Duke University and I co-authored this for the RRNMF Neuromuscular Journal.

Interesting reading for medical historians, baseball lovers and fans of the Iron Horse.

Lou Gehrig day talk show

In honor of Lou Gehrig Day on June 2, Lawrence Knorr had me on the Sunbury Press talk show to discuss Lou, his legacy, his fight against ALS and my book about that battle (Last Ride of the Iron Horse.) We also talked about Lou's movie career and Lou's opinion about Babe Ruth's "called shot" in the 1932 World Series. Enjoy, and remember Lou this Wednesday!

Brooklyn Dodgers legend Pete Reiser

Now on sale: my biography of Pistol Pete Reiser. It’s a fresh take on a ballplayer who if not for one frightful flaw, could’ve been the greatest in Dodgers history.

Baseball’s Greatest What If: The Story and Tragedy of Pistol Pete Reiser

"An engrossing, comprehensive look at a ballplayer who knew only one way to play." -- Tyler Kepner, baseball columnist for the New York Times and author of K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches.

"Like Reiser going after a ball, Joseph passionately pursues this story and gives an extraordinary ballplayer his due." -- Anthony Castrovince, writer for MLB.com and author of A Fan's Guide to Baseball's Analytics.

"Dan Joseph hit a HR with Last Ride of the Iron Horse, this book on Pete Reiser is a grand slam. GREAT biography!" -- Baseball Almanac.

Pete Reiser book now on audio

My biography of the Brooklyn Dodgers' great Pistol Pete Reiser is now an audio book! Voiceover artist Steve Zarro did a great job bringing the book to life. Click on the link below to hear an audio sample. I really like Steve's impression of old-time announcer Red Barber calling Reiser's inside-the-park grand slam, as heard in the 2010 Captain America movie.
