The Work Continues
Now that Tokyo Kaiju
is out (and kicking butt) I'm writing shorter stuff and kind of giving myself an author vacation.
Deadlines are starting at me, but I can ignore them for a bit.
FYI, I'm reading a bit to recharge my batteries and stumbled on L.G. Estrella, who writes really fun stuff.
If you want to get something from me sooner than later, pick up Summer Solstice Shenanigans.
I've got a fun short story in there. I think it comes out June 21.
Catch you all as soon as I have something else to say (I'm quiet for an author).

Getting weird with this year's reading challenge
I figured this year I'll sprinkle in some odd choices to read, between stuff I already know I'll like.
I've already read books on prison, being a call girl, pro-wrestling, navy bootcamp, book marketing, bar bets, and many others.
Some have been fun, some not as fun, but I think it's important to throw a little randomness into my reading. After all, you never know when some random bit of information will be useful when writing.
Most of these books are short and on Kindle Unlimited, so even the not so great ones are cheap and finished quickly.
Anyone else want to get weird with me? Got a suggestion for a short nonfiction book I should read? Let me know.

A Damned Shame - The book that almost wasn't
So, A Damned Shame is out now. I've got to say, it's my personal favorite, which is funny, because it wasn't planned.
Originally, the Warlock series was to be five books. Then I added in Santa Demon, cheating by sneaking in a novellette.
Things kept going on schedule after that, but then I realized I really needed to get a solo Bert book out there. Not for fans, as much, but because he takes up so much space in my head.
I wrote his book, Hell of a Party, as a spin-off, of sorts. It was going to be book 3.5, I think, but Amazon wouldn't link it to the main series, and many people couldn't find it. We folded it into the main series, and incorporated Hell into the story more prominently.
Singapore Spirits featured Hell even more, and by the time it came to write Tokyo Kaiju, I realized how much story I needed to wrap up in Hell first.
Thus, A Damned Shame, book 6 of a five book series, was born. This one switches between Mark and Bert as the story goes on, and I think it works really well. By the time it ended, we were finally set for book 7, which I'll be working with John on pretty soon.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy A Damned Shame as much as I did writing it. Playing around and being flexible resulted in a much richer world for Mark and company to play in, and I think you'll all enjoy how the story wraps up in book 7.

EXCERPT:
I tried to come up with a plan as the blast hurled us outside, but nothing came to mind. The energy shield had kept us from getting roasted, but I wasn’t optimistic about surviving a 30-story-fall to the street below.
Somehow I’d screwed up again, and it was about to cost me everything. If I’d been alone, I might have chanced the explosion. I’d become heavily fire-resistant as of late. I’d thought it was due to absorbing demon energy, but it seemed I had the elemental my mother had grafted to me to thank for that.
“Thank” is probably the wrong word. I’d use whatever tools I had at my disposal, regardless of how I’d acquired them.
At any rate, that option wasn’t open, because I wasn’t alone. I had Mira and our unborn children to protect. Ideally, I’d help the whole team, but I had to trust Bert had figured something out to protect him and Samantha. Actually, it was probably the other way around.
I could barely hear him shout above the rushing of the wind as we fell. “I can’t reach,” he said. “Get them, babe!”
I pushed the barrier of the energy shield out, trying to make some kind of crude glider. It didn’t do much to slow our fall, but maybe I could aim us somewhere soft.
After a quick adjustment of my energy, I angled toward the side of the building with the glider wings and prepared to use my body as a cushion for Mira. The impact was going to suck, but it was the best thing I could come up with. Right before I hit, a shadow fell over us, and an unearthly shriek filled the night.
It sent an instinctual shiver down my spine, even before I placed the source.
“I can’t grab you unless you drop the shield,” A low, powerful voice bellowed from somewhere above us. “Drop it. Quickly.”
I did, almost instantly. I was face down, so I couldn’t see who was talking, but Mira was smiling in relief. Putting two and two together, I figured it out.
Samantha had come to the rescue.

“There are energy signatures through the wall,” Bert told me through his connector, an implanted bit of technology that let us communicate telepathically. “Lots of soon-to-be corpses around. Are you gonna get pretty, or what?”
Pretty. Yeah, only another demon would think the midnight-black monstrosity I became when I gave in to my darker side was attractive. Well, demons and Mira, for some reason.
I’d resisted the urge to shift, so far. We’d gone through Siem Reap, combing the sparsely-populated area until we found an underground entrance to The Fifth’s headquarters. The path inside had been deserted so far, but I couldn’t trust that luck to hold. The door in front of us looked new, too new to be anything but an addition to their security.
We’d make short work of that.
After I changed.
As much as I hated it, I needed to get ready to inflict a lot of violence as quickly as possible. I knew getting rid of the Shapers and their Shaped creations was the right thing to do, but that didn’t stop the nightmares from coming after I did what was necessary to stop them.
Samantha and Bert didn’t have any such problems, but they’d grown up in the Badlands and the Circles of Hell. Kill or be killed was probably scrawled on the wall of their preschools in orphan blood.
I’d put it off as long as possible, but I needed to get the change over with. I took several quick, but deep, breaths to prepare. Hyperventilating a bit before the change seemed to help for some reason. Then, before I could talk myself out of it, I took a small knife—one of Emerald’s throwing daggers—out of my belt and sliced it along the side of my arm.
The pain hit me and woke up an anger that was never completely gone.
It started the way it always started. Smoke poured from the corners of my eyes as they shifted from blue-green to a ghostly grey. Horns pushed through my forehead and claws broke out of my fingertips and toes. At the same time, my skin toughened and darkened into black scales.
ran down my chin as my teeth reshaped into sharp points and small tusks cut their way from each side of my lower jaw. If that wasn’t enough, my joints separated and reformed as my muscles grew and stretched, making me several feet taller.
With the change complete, there was no reason to sit around any longer. I took one more deep breath, kicked the door open, and stormed into the room.

Singapore Spirits is coming!
The next Mark Vedis book is out October 4th. There's a lot that happens in this one, so be sure you've read the others (it wouldn't hurt to read Hell of a Party, either) before it comes out.
