When Dreams Shift

I’m not a writer any more.

As a kid I always said I wanted to be an author when I grew up. And for years, that is how I’ve identified myself. A writer. An author. A book lover. Every thing I did was usually somehow linked to books and writing. It was every bit my passion, and I never thought that would fade.

Until it did. Slowly, carefully, like a match biding it’s time. Until one morning I woke up and realized I hadn’t written a new word in months.

And yet… I was okay. I didn’t feel anxious abou...

How (and why) to Write for Yourself

 Hello there!

It has been SUCH a long time. I let this blog sit for a few years, unsure if I would ever come back and write a new post. Do I even have any readers? Would anyone even care if this site just disappeared? For so long, I've been looking at writing with the mindset that I'm writing for others, and not for myself. And that's not okay.

It happens to us all--at some point, a switch happens and we realize we can't remember the last time we wrote something just for the enjoyment of it. As a ...

Why It's Okay to Take a Break from Your Writing

When I was fourteen, I began thinking up ideas for a fantasy story. I started creating and developing characters, thinking of scenes, and imagining plot twists. Soon enough I started daydreaming about all of it as a movie, and that’s when I realized that I didn’t want to write a simple fantasy short story, I wanted to write a novel. So I got to work and started writing chapter one. I thought everything was awesome—my characters were great, my setting was great, my plot was great—everything was g...

How to Create Confidence and Love Your Writing

When I was six years old, my teacher asked each person in my class what they wanted to be when they grew up. Some kids wanted to be doctors. Some wanted to be teachers. Other kids said they didn't know. I, however, knew exactly what I was going to be when I got older. So when the teacher called on me, I spoke with pride and not a single ounce of doubt in my voice. "I'm going to be a writer."
I wish I still had that same confidence and pride. Seventeen years later (omg I'm OLD) and yes, I still lo...

4 Ways You Could Be Ruining Your First Chapter

Every writer knows the importance of the first chapter. The first page, even. These are where you hook your reader. They are the spots where you must make your story appealing and encourage readers to want to keep reading. That's crucial!
Lately I've been seeing a lot of great-looking books on Amazon with gorgeous covers and that sound interesting. In fact, just yesterday I saw a book on Twitter with a gorgeous cover and a description that immediately peaked my interest.
But when I took a...

Life & Writing Update

Hey guys!
It's been a long time since I last posted, so I thought I would take a minute to update you guys on where my writing and personal life are at!

2019 has seriously flown by, and has brought so many new and exciting things to me along the way. As far as my writing goes, I finished up the draft of my YA contemporary fantasy WIP at the beginning of summer and decided to take a writing break until September. At first I really struggled with that because I wasn't making any progress on...

February Book Review: The Wicked Deep

Hey guys!
I intended to write this review a while ago, but as I mentioned in my last post, February totally got away from me and I just didn't get the chance to blog as much as I wanted. But, I did finish another book for my 2019 Goodreads goal! My YA book for the month of February were The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw. I heard some pretty great reviews of this book from a few different friends on twitter, so I decided to give it a try.

AND I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID.

* THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPO...

A Closer Look at My Contemporary Paranormal WIP!

Wow, where did February go?!
One of my monthly goals for February was to blog at least four times--which I totally didn't achieve. But that's okay, because another one of my goals was to be kinder/more forgiving towards myself when I don't reach my goals. So I at least accomplished that

January Book Review: The Hazel Wood

Hey guys!
As some of you may have seen in my 2019 goals post, I have challenged myself to read at least two books a month: one poetry book, and one novel. This challenge is in hopes to break me out of the reading slump I've been in for so long. And in order to keep myself accountable, I'm going to start reviewing the books that I read right here! This month, I read Depression and Other Magic Tricks by Sebrina Benaim and The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. I released a small review...

5 Reasons Your Writing Sessions Aren't Working

You open up your laptop or notebook and sit down to write for a while. You have time, you have motivation, you're feeling good . . . aaaaand an hour later you've written like 16 words. Maybe.
Ever been there? I know I have!
There is nothing more frustrating than feeling ready to write but writing a few to no words. It's tiring, discouraging, and downright annoying. So, I decided to analyze a few of my failed writing sessions to see if there were any factors they had in common. And there definit...
