I've heard of this book and its famous premise for so long, I had written my own version of it in my head.

Unfortunately, my imagined version was better. The actual version suffers only slightly from the problem that the sci-fi technology feels a bit I've heard of this book and its famous premise for so long, I had written my own version of it in my head.

Unfortunately, my imagined version was better. The actual version suffers only slightly from the problem that the sci-fi technology feels a bit simple. There's a robot death dog and earbuds, so he gets full points for predicting these, but they're simultaneously over-explained and under-explained. The descriptions of earphones as mechanical seashells, for example, is fanciful.

The full-wall immersive screen technology is interesting but the concept of the "relatives" in the "parlor" is just something that nobody alive today could recognize or feel inspired by. It just seems like such a waste of an entire room of screens and surround sound to just be listening to people talk and argue in real time.

And with all these screens, he still didn't imagine the the doorbell could have a camera on it...

The book suffers much more from the constant state of existential panic that every character finds themselves in on every page, as well as the rampant sexism, and hysterical/masturbatory pontificating by the male characters.

There are very few pages in this book where someone is not panicking overtly. They say there should be conflict on every page of course but tension needs release otherwise it's just stressful to read.

The worst part for any contemporary reader is the naked sexism. There are two major female characters: his drugged up wife who has no independent thought and is silly, a coward, and ignorant. The other one is an underage girl who lights a spark in his life by being quirky and having independent thought and whom he extremely deliberately informs us is SEVENTEEN years old. Apparently Ray Bradbury was an Abba fan.

Then there's the reason he wrote the book: so he could complain about books and people not reading them and people not valuing them. Much of the last third of the "novel" (it's so short, reddit would say it doesn't count as one) is filled with a train of thought lecture about what he thinks about books in society. Which is fine. But it takes you out of the story, which is supposed to be a dystopia, remember? But now we've got a scared man running and sputtering BIBLE VERSES on the subway and that's supposed to be edgy and provocative. It's the 1950 equivalent of a male podcaster complaining about how they don't even teach cursive anymore.

Not that I disagree with him or that I fail to understand the context in which this book appears. I also love books and I can appreciate all that stuff but it's so dense and really annoying actually.

Then he escapes to the woods where hobos share their fire with him and they're all college professors who have memorized parts of books and they all feast on bacon together and pontificate MORE about how they'll rebuild literate society through memorized orality after the world ends and they survive??? And there are no women there of course because it's for smart people only?????

I'm glad I read it but I also wish I hadn't, does that make sense? I miss assuming that this book was any good. I think it's a bit mediocre for its lofty position in our culture. ...more
