When he reached the auto shop, Mathias entered through the employee entrance. He passed the darkened office and crossed the empty garage to the enclosed area where Andrew handled his “special jobs.” The corrugated metal wall rattled as he yanked open the door. Andrew stood next to the Tacoma with his back to Mathias, a pneumatic wrench in his hand. Parts of the door were strewn across the stained concrete at his feet.

“Come on, man. It’s only been forty-five minutes—” Andrew did a double take. “What happened to you?”

Mathias fixed him with a dark scowl.
A smile tugged at the corners of Andrew’s mouth. He cleared his throat. “I thought vampires couldn’t swim.”

Mathias removed the wilted cowboy hat and dragged fingers through his thick, sodden hair. “That’s witches, idiot.”

“Oh, right.” Andrew nodded, his smirk widening. Mathias’s sharp ears picked up his muttered words. “Unless it’s a pool of holy water.”

Mathias gave him a flat glare, and Andrew’s smile faltered.
