Lawrence Caldwell is believed by some to be a wandering samurai, or a vagrant, or possibly a ninja—though perhaps in his infinite mystery, he is none of these things. Whichever the case, he wanders home as Odysseus did after the great Trojan War in some realm unbeknownst to our world (or was that Elric of Melniboné?) It matters not. Finally, and—by direct theft of a quote from a certain dwarf named Varric Tethras—he “occasionally writes books.”

Write, have fun, study and learn about writing regularly, but when you're doing the ACTUAL writing, forget about craft and tell yourself a fun story.(less)

What I'm working on right now are the sequels to these three stories, Glorious New Age in the Aevalin and The Age of Readventure series, The Black Cobra in The Jinni and The Isekai series and finally Hussy, in my Anarcho series.(less)

I recently got a Silver Honorable Mention in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest, fourth quarter under the name Waraji-sama. Now, if you’re not aware of this contest, it’s the largest one—in the world. A Silver Honorable Mention was considered top fifty, but the contest has been growing so large recently, this quarter Silvers were within the top one hundred places out of thousands of Read more of this blog post »

I just finished this book the other night. I couldn't sleep, it was three-thirty in the morning and I finally got around to the final pages. It's a great book, but it's not going to give you some secret sauce, which Truent says there is none. I wasn' ...more

I like the horror. It's not about monsters ripping people to pieces. The horror is a slow tension that builds from the get-go. It was a fun read. Very short. ...more

Kind of wacky and scary. It's Lovecraft, so I was expecting bright light and a nimbus and a whole chorus to announce my reading of this. It's just a story. It's got me thinking a bit. It's my first story by Lovecraft and I'm trying to digest it. I'm ...more

“People on the outside think there’s something magical about writing, that you go up in the attic at midnight and cast the bones and come down in the morning with a story, but it isn’t like that. You sit in back of the typewriter and you work, and that’s all there is to it.”

“Monkey balls! Monkey balls! Er--I mean monkey pox!”
Lawrence Caldwell

“If you’re reading this, you are the resistance.’—a rip off of that quote from that one movie (but nevertheless it’s completely true.)”
Lawrence Caldwell

“Cyberpunk is a sub-genre of science fiction in a dystopian futuristic setting that tends to focus on a combination of lowlife and high tech, featuring futuristic technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with societal collapse, dystopia or decay.' Ah, well if this is not an accurate description of where we're heading, then I don't know what is.”
Lawrence Caldwell

“I've got an idea, but the story... the story will go where it wants to go. The characters drive it, not me.”
Varric Tethras

“Nothing is so necessary for a young man as the company of intelligent women.”
Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

“Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”
Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

“I’m convinced if I keep going one day I will write something decent. On very bad days I will observe that I must have written good things in the past, which means that I’ve lost it. But normally I just assume that I don’t have it. The gulf between the thing I set out to make in my head and the sad, lumpy thing that emerges into reality is huge and distant and I just wish that I could get them closer.”
Neil Gaiman
