I think defining the antagonist came naturally.
Whatever good the antagonists might do they ultimately do it for evil purposes.
Whatever bad the protagonists might do they will eventually find their way back to good and doing the right thing.
Keeping that in mind it was easy to make the antagonists seem like the saviors until their evil plot came to light.
