Reflecting on Romance in the North and a Little Family Drama

Hifolks! Phew, I am just about recovered after attending Romance in the North atthe Hilton Hotel in Leeds last weekend. It was a lovely day with a chilledvibe, and I’m going to tell  you allabout it in today’s blog post.
Afterhaving only three hours’ sleep due to an incident outside our house the nightbefore, my daughter and I made it to the event later than planned but we gotthere, we got set up, and we got stuck in. Read on to find out what happened. Romantic image with pink love hearts and photos of paranormal author Catherine Green, Scottish second chance romance author Louise Murchie, and Catherine’s daughter Georgina at Romance in the North book signing event in Leeds, UK. Text reads, “Reflecting on Romance in the North and a Little Family Drama at SpookyMrsGreen.com. Hashtag Redcliffe Novels.”

ADrunk Driver Destroyed my Husband’s Car

Iwent to bed early the night before the event because I knew it would be a longday. Having got home late from a busy shift at my day job, I barely had time toeat my dinner and fall into bed before I was woken by a loud bang as a drunkdriver crashed into my husband’s parked car on the street outside our house. Hehad left his car on the road so that he could park it in front of mine on ourdrive when I got home from work as he was up early for work himself on theSaturday morning (are you following me?). He fell asleep on the sofa, and Idecided we should just leave his car where it was because it wasn’t worthmoving for such a short time. We have left it on the road before with noproblems. We learned a hard lesson that night!

PoliceCars, a Transporter Lorry, Scared Children

Theincident happened at around 11:20pm. Our younger daughter’s bedroom is at thefront of the house, and she heard the impact when I did. It terrified her. Ourolder daughter thought it was a firework. I had to leave her to comfort hersister while I supported their dad as he dealt with the incident. Beingneurodiverse, I knew this was really going to cause him stress. So, I had to bethere to speak to the police and handle the situation. He coped well, actually, and his insurance company was amazing. He now has a hire car and an insurancepayout so that we can go shopping for a replacement car at the weekend. Irecommend Hastings Direct car insurance!

Shocking image of two cars that have crashed on a suburban street in Cheshire, England. Drunk driver crashed into a parked car. Police car parked behind with blue lights flashing. Debris on the street. Image of a white Vauxhall Corsa that has been in a crash. The front wing is destroyed on the driver’s side, the bumper is falling off, the lights are broken, and the driver’s door is dented. Text reads, “The damage caused when a drunk driver crashed into my husband’s parked car. My husband’s car was parked where that red car ended up. And this is the damage. The photo of the road was taken from our driveway.

WeFinally Made it to Leeds

Afterfiling an insurance claim online and grabbing a couple of hours’ sleep, I wasup extra early to take my husband to work before driving approximately seventymiles to Leeds. I was the last author to arrive, but my table neighbours allpitched in to help set up and calm us down after the chaos, and we were readyto greet our visitors. The hotel was lovely, and room was chic but with anintimate energy that felt nice. It all felt calm and serene, which I definitelyneeded at that point!

Itwas great to meet new readers and introduce them to the Redcliffe novels seriesand my vampire hunter novels. I had compliments from some visitors that werepleased to see a Gothic author in their home city. Others were happy to find aparanormal author to satisfy their thirst for dark romance. I had a nice chatwith the authors at the event, I did a little shopping, and I had time alonewith my younger daughter who had accompanied me. Unfortunately, we were tootired to explore Leeds city centre at lunchtime, but we agreed that a returnvisit with the family is on our to-do list. There is some fascinating architecturein the buildings we could see from the hotel, and I want to explore their historyand see if it inspires my muse.

Onething I love about attending these events is the chance to discover new booksfor my collection, and Romance in the North did not disappoint. I had a lovelychat with my table neighbour Kelly Lord and herhusband, and I bought a short story anthologythat she had collaborated on. I like the look of all of her books, but Icouldn't buy them all right then, as much as I would have loved to! So, Icompromised and chose one to start me off. I’m enjoying the book so far and Iwill review it when it is finished. We also received a cute little “Peenie”squishy toy that Kelly makes as a hobby. These little toys are popping up (punintended) at all the big book signing events to accompany the saucy books inwhich they feature and now I want to build a collection of those as well!

IMet my Author Friend

Thehighlight of my day was finally being able to meet my author friend Louise Murchie in real life. We have beenfriends on social media for several years, bonding over our children of similarages, our experiences in parenthood and running a small business, and of courseour books. I was delighted to get my hands on signed copies of her Tango Down books. I have read them on Kindle, and they were brilliant, and now Ihave the signed paperbacks to display on my bookshelves at home. They will beaccompanying me to Spain on our upcoming family holiday!

Reflecting on PARA-CON 2024

Ijust got back from attending PARA-CON 2024.  Let me tell you about the event, the wonderful paraunity communitythat I met, and the spooky merch that I brought home.

Reflectingon PARA-CON 2024

Phew, what a busy day that was! I am so glad it was local to me, although I amexcited to travel around the UK with upcoming author events. This one was inNorthwich, just a fifteen-minute drive from home and a town where I do most ofmy weekend shopping with the family. The venue was cosy and traditional, andI’m told that PARA-CON 2025 will be bigger and better so that’s exciting. Ihave already confirmed attendance for the next event so keep checking my blogfor updates.

Anyway, back to the weekend. PARA-CON was organised by BiB Paranormal who offer a comprehensive paraunity community platform for ghosthunters, historians, paranormal investigators and anyone interested in theparanormal world to meet and share stories. They brought together a fantasticline-up of speakers for the main stage including Richard Felix (I totally didnot go all fangirl when I saw him in the same room as me!), The Occult Family,Paranormal Penny Pinchers, Jack O’Lantern (where it was my daughter’s turn tobe the fangirl), and many more.

MeetingThe Occult Family

Mygirls and I had a lovely chat with The Occult Family and were invited to lookinside their haunted museum at the venue. It was a tent set up inside the mainhall where they displayed a selection of haunted artifacts from their personalcollection. I was fascinated with a prom dress on a mannequin and my daughtersloved the haunted dolls. The energy inside that tent was intense and I couldn’tlook at one of the dolls, reportedly the most haunted doll in the UK, becauseshe gave me a very strange energetic sensation in the pit of my stomach, and Iknew that she didn’t like me. I can’t explain it, but I could feel it. So, Ileft the tent and retreated to the safety of my book table.

Meetingthe Paraunity Community

I wasvery happy to meet my fellow paraunity community members and share stories. Wehad a lovely mix of ghost hunters, UFO chasers, movie merch traders, historians, mediums and many more diverse people to speak with. And we met theghostbusters who were raising money for charity. We had to hide Gary the Ghoston my table so he wasn’t hit by the proton packs!

Idiscovered groups where I can take my children ghost hunting, so we shall bebusy next year once I book us onto some events. I was interviewed on video andlive stream throughout the day so I’m excited to see what comes of those. Youcan already see me and my fellow PARA-CON attendees on the usual social mediachannels.

I’ma Happy Spooky Lady

Thisevent was a great way to start the Halloween season and get me out of mydaytime routine of work and parenting. It will be great to see reviews of mybooks from the fans that I met at the event, I am happily playing with the ghostequipment that we bought from Polter Gear, and I got my PARA-CON T-shirt that Iwill wear with pride in Benidorm at the end of October.

Mynext event is Romance in the North on 12th October. See you there!

“AI, Write a Story about a Demon”

I recently discovered the power of AI and introducedmy daughter to it. She asked it to write a story about a demon. Read the storyand tell me your thoughts.

AI Story about a Demon

There once was a powerful demon named Azazel, who hadroamed the earth for centuries. He had been summoned by humans throughouthistory to do their bidding, and he had grown tired of the constant cycle ofservitude. Azazel longed for something more, something that would make himtruly feel alive.

One day, he heard whispers of a powerful artifact thathad been hidden away for centuries. The artifact was said to grant the one whopossessed it immense power, and Azazel knew that he had to have it.

He searched for years, using his demonic powers totrack down the artifact's location. Finally, he found it hidden deep within amountain range, guarded by powerful magic.

Azazel knew that he could not take the artifact byforce, so he hatched a plan. He would disguise himself as a human and infiltratethe nearby village. There, he would gain the trust of the villagers and learnmore about the artifact's location.

It took months of careful planning, but Azazeleventually gained the trust of the village's elders. They revealed theartifact's location to him, and Azazel set out to retrieve it.

When he arrived at the mountain's entrance, Azazel wasconfronted by the guardians of the artifact. They were fierce warriors, armedwith enchanted weapons and powerful spells.

But Azazel was a demon, and he was not easilydefeated. He fought his way through the guardians, using his powers to vanquishthem one by one.

Finally, he reached the artifact, and he felt itspower coursing through his veins. He knew that he had become something morethan just a demon. With the artifact's power, he was unstoppable.

For years, Azazel ruled over the earth with an ironfist. He was feared by all, and his power was unmatched. But as the centuriespassed, Azazel began to feel the weight of his actions. He had become amonster, a creature of pure evil.

In the end, Azazel realized that he could not continuedown this path. He knew that he had to give up the artifact and atone for hissins. With great effort, he returned the artifact to its resting place andvanished from the earth.

Azazel's story lived on, a cautionary tale of thedangers of power and the corrupting influence of evil. And even though he wasgone, his legend lived on, a testament to the enduring power of the demon whohad once ruled over the world.

What the author thinks of it

I was impressed that AI could create a decent story, but then I wasn’t surprised. It makes for a light read and if I had writtenthis type of story, there would be more violence and probably some sex. Hey, Ilike to write it spicy! The AI program will come in useful for writing blurbs andsocial media posts anyway, leaving me more time to write the good stories.

Beltane Blessings and Happy May Day! 🌺🔥🌿

Beltane is an ancient Celtic festival that has beencelebrated for thousands of years. It marks the beginning of summer and theseason of growth and fertility. The festival is traditionally held on May 1stand is a time for honouring the beauty and power of nature, and for connectingwith the energies of growth, abundance, and renewal.

Beltane has been celebrated in many different waysthroughout history, but some of the most common practices include lightingbonfires, dancing, and performing rituals to bless the crops and livestock. The bonfires were seen as a symbol of the sun's power and were believed to haveprotective and purifying properties.
During Beltane, people would also participate inrituals to promote fertility and prosperity. This was a time for celebratingnew beginnings, as the earth began to awaken from its winter slumber and newlife began to sprout from the soil.
Today, Beltane is still celebrated by many peoplearound the world, particularly those who follow pagan or Wiccan traditions. While the festival may have changed over time, its core values remain the same:a celebration of the cycles of life, the beauty of nature, and the power of growthand renewal.
To celebrate Beltane, people may choose to plant newseeds, take a nature walk, or performrituals that honour the energies of the season. Some may also choose tohold a bonfire or participate in group dances or ceremonies.
Beltane is a reminder that we are all connected to thenatural world and that our own growth and renewal is tied to the cycles of theearth. It is a time to honour the past, celebrate the present, and embrace thefuture with open hearts and minds.
In a world that often feels disconnected from nature,Beltane is a reminder of the power and beauty of the earth and our own placewithin it. As we move forward into the season of growth and abundance, let usremember the lessons of Beltane and embrace the energies of creativity, renewal, and transformation.

The Vampire of Blackpool Tells Her Story

Are you planning a holiday to Blackpool this year? You hadbetter watch out for the resident vampire and her companions. Here’s an excerptfrom Vampire of Blackpool:

Excerpt

Leaping into the air, I struggledto ascend at first. My balance was unsteady, and my body felt like a leadweight. Gritting my teeth, I forced my mind to focus, and I managed a swift ifunstable flight to the hospital. Fortunately, it was only a short distanceaway, but by the time I alighted behind a brick store shed in the grounds of mydestination, I almost collapsed. I was starving. I was weak. I managed to walkslowly across the road and towards the double doors that led into the waitingroom for the casualty department. There were ambulances and vehicles coming andgoing, but the pavement was strangely empty of people. All the busy life wascontained within the building.

Staggering through the automaticdoors, I gasped as a wave of sheer exhaustion poured over me. I was descendinginto bloodlust. I very nearly attacked the first person I set eyes on, but atthe last moment managed to control myself. I was surrounded by beating heartsand succulent bodies. I needed blood. As I leaned against the wall, my breathrasping, my eyes wild with hunger and pain, I became aware of voicesapproaching as two nurses hurried to my aid.

“Here,” one woman shouted, “Letus help you.”

#BookReview Without You (The Real Thing #2) by Felicity Rose

Havingread The Real Thing(Book #1) by Felicity Rose previously, I was excited to read the sequel, WithoutYou. Here is my review.

MyReview

Havingread and enjoyed the first book in this series, I was excited to see whathappened after a dramatic end previously. It played out pretty much as I wouldexpect but that is a good thing because it is also pretty much how I wouldbehave, or how I would expect other people to behave in similar circumstances.Again, I liked the sex scenes and the visits to "the club." It isnice to see reference to interests that don't fit society's norm, and to havethem included in a healthy, mature manner rather than as titillation orsomething criminal. There had to be a nice, vanilla end to the story of course!

Thebook could do with some more editing to tighten the grammar, and I could seewhere readers from other social/cultural circles might find the writing style abit clumsy. I understood it because the author wrote in the same style as shewould speak, which I recognised. Still, I recommend that you focus on thestory, not on the writing, and support indie authors.

Excerpt

“You have to feed, Jack,” I insisted, “And you cannot useme. We tried that before and you almost killed me, remember?”

“You found a way to survive,” my vampire replied gruffly.

I laughed, but it was not amusement that brought such areaction.

“I survived,” I said, emphasising the word, “because of yourbrother. Danny saved me. He sacrificed his wolves so that I could claw backsome human strength. Maybe that’s what caused this…” I gestured to the emptyspace on the bed behind me, “thing with Suri.”

“Perhaps,” Jack replied quietly, “But the point is, yousurvived.”

#BookReview: Verity by Colleen Hoover

I am determined to keep up with my local book club this year, and today I share my review for Verity by Colleen Hoover.

My Review

This was my first Colleen Hoover novel and I read it for my local book club. Yes, I enjoyed it! The book deals with the dark side of the human mind and the nature of obsession and love, but you never quite know what is "real" and what is not. It kept me hooked but I didn't get too emotionally involved. Perhaps as a writer I managed to stay detached, knowing that the protagonists were also writers (apart from Jeremy, and I still can't decide what to think about him). Still, it was an entertaining read, and it gave me something new to think about.

About the Book

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.
