I’ve been meaning to update for a while and I finally started this post a few days ago. Unfortunately, I set my notebook down on the patio table not realizing it was wet. (I do a lot of drafting/brainstorming long hand.) So, here we are again! Hopefully, with no wet tables this time lol.

THE UPDATES

The first drafts of Defiance and Kiss of Shadows are done, and Rebel Moon is about halfway there. I’m going to finish it and then start revisions. I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone reading this that I had some really slow writing years. Burn out is not fun. Fortunately, the last 6 months or so have been pretty consistent and I’m hoping this is the new normal. Cross your fingers, y’all!

I don’t anticipate these revisions to be smooth or fast, though, because by first draft, I mean very rough. But words are words, and I can fix (usually) what I’ve written. Hopefully (again), I can release at least Defiance and Rebel Moon this year, but since I love all these characters so much, I want to make sure they get the time and development they need. Kiss of Shadows might end pushed to the new year. We’ll see.

THE TRIP

I’ll probably get into this more in a later post, but I just spent a week driving my dad around north Alabama. Why you may wonder? Because he’s started a book project of his own photographing old theaters. (Do creatives ever really retire? He certainly hasn’t.) This was a lot of driving for hermit me, but I didn’t want him going alone and there were some definite perks. We go to hang out with my son for bit since he lives up there. It’s a 6 hour drive so between work and school, he doesn’t get to come home a lot. We had some great food! And I really wanted to see the last town for research purposes. I didn’t get a lot of photos despite taking my camera, but here’s one of the theater in Fort Payne, that town that I wanted to see.

Sanctuary is finished! I ended up going through the final proof a couple of times (okay maybe more like four) and added a little bit more. It’s uploading now and I’ll add the links as soon as they’re live.

This is a pretty low angst book, which doesn’t surprise me since I intended it to just be a short fun novella. Harmony and Arkyn clicked pretty well so most of the conflict is external. I had a lot of fun writing them and I hope y’all will enjoy reading about them.

Defiance, I hate to say, hasn’t been as easy. It was almost done but the book just didn’t work, so I’ve started over from the first chapter. It’s up to about 15k words now and works much better. I hope to be finished with it by the end of the year. I’ll update when I’m closer to finishing it.

Some of y’all might have noticed a new edition to the coming next section of the books page—Arkyn. I thought Harmony and Akryn’s story would be a short little novella about a ring of thieves. Boy, was I wrong. Or more accurately, they had other ideas! That novella is now a book retitled Sanctuary. I just got the final edits back (the last proof reading round) and it should be released sometime next week.

I’ve been getting ready for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) the last few days, which mostly means cleaning like a madwoman and catching up on a lot of little admin stuff. Those don’t generally take a lot of time if you actually sit down to do them lol. Anyway, I’m using NaNoWriMo to finish Defiance. I ended up throwing out a lot of what I had but the new start is much better. The release will depend on the edits. Sanctuary took longer than expected to get back, but this is a busy time of year for my editor. I’ll keep the blog updated.

And finally, FREEDOM will be free until Nov 13 most places. Apple hasn’t updated yet, and it’s .99 on Amazon. I’m trying to get that price matched so hopefully in a couple of days it’ll drop there too.

WHAT I’M WORKING ON

I’m back in the writing/revising cave with KISS OF SHADOWS, and working on DEFIANCE. Hopefully, I’ll have release dates by the end of the year. I’m also tinkering with a new secret project that I’m very excited about. More on that later!

Hey y’all! Who’s looking forward to fall? I definitely am, but we have a while yet in my neck of the woods. We’re still in the mid-high 80s. The décor is fun though, and I love the excess of apple cinnamon candles lol. Anyway, onto to the updates!

If you subscribe to the newsletter, you’ve already seen that my eldest has taken it over for me. It always ends up languishing on my to do list, and she has experience in running one in her IRL job. We’re still tweaking the process, but it will go out once a month with updates, cover reveals, sales etc. Or if I forgot to give her a release date, and we both missed it in the proofing and testing stage. Ahem. Sorry about that. The only other time it will go out more than once a month is if I have links for a new book released in that month and need to share the store links.

Waking The Moon will be out October 24, 2022. It’s with the proofer now, so I haven’t set up pre-order links yet. I’ve heard too many horror stories about an early file being sent out instead of the final, and I can’t take that anxiety lol. The book’s page on my site is here. Once I have those links, I will add them to the page and the homepage.

 This book, y’all. I thought it would be published by now, but when I dove into edits I realized some of it was just not working and I wasn’t sure how to fix it. So I let it sit a little bit and worked on Waking The Moon. And it worked! I should be done with the revision in about a week, send it to my editor next month, and hopefully release it in December, depending on editor and proofer schedules.

Lee Henderson (Rebel Moon) and Mikal Jain (Defiance) are both loud in my head right now, which is a pita because so is Mitchell Grant (Kiss Of Shadows). Don’t get me started on Luke Black (Kiss of Midnight). Rebel Moon and Defiance will be next, and I’ll be working on Viking’s Conquest too. Probably all three at the same time. (When I get stuck, I like to jump around. It usually helps.) Luke is just gonna have to wait. Rebel Moon, Defiance, and Viking’s Conquest should all be released in the first half of next year.

It does! I have Lupus and I’m amazed I haven’t been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was also diagnosed with a pinched nerve this summer and that led to some little changes that have made a much bigger difference than I expected. Yoga, short walks over the course of the day, and my hot tub. Who knew an inflatable hot tub from Wally World would make such a difference? I also set up a data heavy excel sheet last month, and it’s let me see where my best hours are for working. Honestly, I’ve read that advice before but was skeptical. Live and learn, right?

Whew! I can’t believe we’re more than halfway through 2022 already, and man, has it been a wild ride! I spent the first quarter pretty sick, but I’m bouncing back. The writing has been slow but steady which is always a relief lol! Onto the updates!

Kiss of Shadows (Elora & Mitchell) got delayed because of illness and some editing delays. I hope to have a concrete release date next month. I’m also working on Waking The Moon (Maggie & Nick), which should release in October. Defiance (Danine & Mikal) is also in progress. I’ve had some questions about the next Viking book. It should be next after Waking The Moon and Defiance.

In other personal updates, meet our granddog Zelda, who prefers to be called Princess, and is staying with us for a little while. She’s not very helpful with writing, but she’s great at sitting on the back of my couch and judging me for staring off into space lol.

I hope everyone is having a great summer! I heading back to the editing and writing cave.

Demon-hybrid Elora Cates was banished by the Order for ten years. When she finally returns home, the Camden region is in upheaval.
