It feels like the Concubine King was written to cater to all my interests: political fantasy, spicy queer fun, and just the right amount of angst sprinkled in.

On the surface, it might seem like a usual spicy fantasy story with the peasant turned king premise, but it really surprised me just how deep and aching it is.

The main character, Ethyr, is such a fun stupid brat and I loved the way he navigated the world and the palace intrigue. You can’t help but be frustrated at his decisions but it made for such interesting conflict that it keeps you glued to the pages.
I also thought the relationship he has with his guard, Poyut, was really sweet. Additionally, I thought the way sexuality, power dynamics, and agency was explored in the gods chapters was SO interesting. Not to mention that Emily Oracle writes some of THE BEST SMUT I’ve ever read.
Her writing in general is such a treat. It’s the exact kind of writing style that I love: really evocative and beautiful but never heavy or dry. It flows so delightfully that it just kept me turning pages.
I love how this book is clearly fantasy in a gorgeous setting, but it’s never bogged down by world building and descriptions for pages on end as some traditional fantasy tends to be.
The villain character (no spoilers) was also SUCH a delight imo. I never really knew where I had him, I wanted to trust him but was also constantly suspicious of him, which exactly where I want to be.
The twists had me absolutely reeling and I loved the tonal shift in the chapters at the ending where everything comes together. The actual end had me SOBBING all the way through and I thought it was so masterfully executed.
This was everything I wanted in a smutty fantasy story, and I didn’t even know it.

5/5 I will be reading everything Oracle writes from now on, and I want everyone to read this book and scream about it with me. ...more
