Shannon Baker writes mysteries about strong women in dangerous situations. Her books are set in the iconic landscapes of the American West, from the Colorado Rockies to the Nebraska prairies, to the deserts of southern Arizona. Baker spent 20 years in the Nebraska Sandhills, where cattle outnumber people by more than 50:1, and too few years living on Colorado’s front range. Her dark suspense, The Desert Behind Me, is a 2019 Winner of the New Mexico/Arizona Book Award.
Seconds before quitting writing forever and taking up competitive drinking, Shannon was voted Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer’s 2014 Writer of the Year and, buoyed with that confidence, continued to write, earning another RMFW Writer of the Year nod in 2017-18. Shannon makes her

“You promise to love and cherish, and then the person you adore shows you what an asshole he is and you spend way too much time and energy expunging him from your life.” She”
Shannon Baker, Broken Ties

“Diane dropped her head back and sighed at the ceiling before giving me that exasperated big-sister tone. “We’re sisters. Always and forever. That means I love you even when I hate you. And it means I can hate you because I know you’ll always be there when I’m done hating you.” I worked my throat, but words wouldn’t come. “Okay, yeah. Maybe I didn’t think that before. But I don’t want to end up like Miriam and Debbie Fine. Old ladies who’ve lost the best gift life has to offer. Mom and Glenda are gone. But there’s you and me and Louise and Susan. And even Robert, Michael, Douglas, and Jeremy. And that’s a whole lot of love and hate right there.” She wavered in front of me, tears clouding my vision. Still, I couldn’t move or speak. “And Dad. It’s going to take the mighty power of the Fox clan to pull him back from this.” I nodded, the well inside me filling with a slow trickle. She took one step toward me. “Yesterday I hated you. Today I love you. And I know you’ll forgive me because out of all of us, you’re the one who never forgets: Family is the most important thing.”
Shannon Baker, Exit Wounds

“Because the goal in writing is always to get to the truth of a character, dig inside and find out what drives them and how they feel, I think there is a part of me in every character I write.”
Shannon Baker

Beth Hi Shannon,
Thanks for befriending me here as well as in real-life and a very happy new year to you!
- Beth

Shannon I just added The Daily Coyote to my reading list. Sometimes I get a little disdainful of "city folk" who take the romance of living off the land like it's quaint and cute, or a modern day version of Walden Pond. Then again, sometimes I really identify with their experience.

Darlene I finished The Daily Coyote which is wonderful and controversial. Also just finished Hunt for Justice by Lucinda Delaney Schroeder who was a special agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She lives here in Montrose and is coming to my house this week for give a presentation to my book club - fascinating!
