I prefer the years when the calendar gives us a weekend after Thanksgiving to finish off the leftover turkey and recover from the rival weekend in college football. But ready or not, yesterday was the 1st Sunday in Advent, the four weeks of spiritual preparation for the celebration of the coming of Christ.

Just in time, I received an

"Wow - this book took me a long time to read, not because it's lengthy, but because there is SO much to chew on, especially as a white Christian in these days and times. If you are new to the whole "doing the work" part of racial reconciliation, you m" Read more of this review »

Powerful! Sack takes us on a journey through our painful racial history through the window of the tragedy, strength and faith of one church. A must-read for white folks who need to understand the continuing challenge of racism.

“Is it possible that our world still knows better how to deal with a bandit, a murderer, and insurrectionist than it knows what to do with the Prince of Peace? There is a sense in which an assassin's attempt on the pope's life is less shocking to our world than the pope's forgiveness of him. Is it possible that we would rather deal with raw power that rides on a stallion than with this one who comes on a donkey, with the weapons of love, patience, suffering, and peace? Given the choice, isn't it possible that we would take Barabbas, too?”
James A. Harnish

“God came down in Jesus not to prepare us for the next world but to set us free to live in this world the way Jesus lived, which was the costly way of reconciling love, relentless hope, reverberating joy.”
James A. Harnish, When God Comes Down: An Advent Study for Adults

One night the bar was hit by lightning and burned to the ground. The bar owner promptly sued the church, saying that the congregation’s prayers were responsible for the fire. The church contested the suit. After hearing the case, the judge said, “I’m not sure how I’ll rule on this case, but one thing is clear. The bar owner believes in prayer, and the church people don”
