Robert Humphreys was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and graduated from Central High School in 1968. During his teenage years, he worked at A Schwab's department store on Beale Street, where he witnessed the protest of the city's sanitation workers. He served in the army and was stationed in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970. He married his high school sweetheart in 1971. Both now reside in Decatur, Alabama. Though much of Red, White, and Black is fiction, the story is based on the experiences and life of Robert, what he witnessed, and the world he grew up in.

Robert M. Humphreys My story is about Memphis and the surrounding area. I grew up in Memphis and lived there for forty years. The book is loosely (very loosely) based on historic events, and my experiences (again very loosely). When I traveled to Memphis to work, I started remembering things that happened, and imagined how those events might have affective people's lives and how they may have reacted. (less)
