Sometimes I switch from typing to writing longhand on a legal pad, or even dictating into voice memos on my phone--anything to trick my brain into thinking I'm doing something different. And sometimes I go for a walk or a run or practice yoga, and come back to the writing later in the day. (less)

Reading (usually fiction, poetry, or memoir) tends to inspire me in terms of language and style, whereas stories I hear (from a friend or in the news) and people I meet inspire me by making me wonder, What made this person the way s/he is? “When you knew what you wanted, everything became simpler, more streamlined.”
Joanna Cantor, Alternative Remedies for Loss

“They nodded, polite and distant. It wasn't just that they didn't understand what the past year had been for her, she saw, but that they didn't want to try to understand. Loss, grief---her friends insulated their youth against such things, as if to even truly acknowledge then was an invitation.”
Joanna Cantor, Alternative Remedies for Loss

“Her craving for abstraction, for metaphor, was almost physical, but she could not will herself to construct meaning from her surroundings.”
Joanna Cantor, Alternative Remedies for Loss
