Legend of a Suicide
Hello all,
The book I worked on for ten years, Legend of a Suicide, has just come out in paperback, chosen by Lorrie Moore for The New Yorker Book Club this month. It will be the May selection of The Times (London) Book Club. The book has been on 25 “Best Books of the Year” lists in the US, UK, Ireland, and Australia, including the New York Times, and is the winner of the Grace Paley Prize and a California Book Award. It’s been a national bestseller for three months now in France (published as Sukkwan Island) and is shortlisted for the Prix des lecteurs de L’Express. It will be coming out in 8 languages and more than 50 countries, and feature film rights have been bought by Chris Meloni (from Law and Order SVU, http://www.deadline.com/2010/04/law-o... )
A few reviews: (more than 75 on my website, www.davidvann.com)
“An American classic.”-- The Sunday Times (UK)
“The Great American novel we’ve awaited.”-- Le Point (French magazine)
“A truly great writer.”-- The Irish Sunday Independent
“One of the best writers of his generation.”-- Le Figaro (French newspaper)
“A piece of relentless, heartbreaking brilliance that bears comparison with Cormac McCarthy's The Road.”-- The Weekend Australian
“His legend is at once the truest memoir and the purest fiction...Nothing quite like this book has been written before.”-- The London Observer
“The reportorial relentlessness of Vann’s imagination often makes his fiction seem less written than chiseled. A small, lovely book has been written out of his large and evident pain. ‘A father, after all,’ Vann writes, ‘is a lot for a thing to be.’ A son is also a lot for a thing to be; so is an artist. With Legend of a Suicide, David Vann proves himself a fine example of both.”-- New York Times Book Review
I’d be grateful if you’d tell people about the book, and I’d love to hear your comments. I’m always happy to visit book clubs by phone.
Best,
David
