"It’s cold and snowing outside today. I don’t like recess anymore, haven’t liked it since I got put in the special ed class. The teachers want us to put our coats and gloves on and go outside anyway; they say it’s good for us. Most of the kids still run around, so they probably stay warm, but I get cold standing by myself. I shiver as I watch a boy chase a girl around the swing set; she has winter boots on and a blue and white coat. She’s screaming, but I think she likes him chasing her. When he catches her, he wraps his arms around her in a hug, pinning her arms at her side. She keeps struggling to try to get away, and finally they fall down in the snow, laughing."

Lisa Loomis has created some memorable, highly relatable characters in this first book in her Morgan Mallory edgy coming-of-age series. Beautifully written, she is able to evoke memories (both good and bad) of that first love and all the stupid things we do when we start thinking with our hearts and hormones instead of our brains. It just ends up being a series of hard lessons. It’s steamy and the plot has so many twists and turns that I read nearly all of it in one sitting. Plus, the ending may just piss you off a little, but it’s just like life, isn’t it? As a 40-something, I also appreciated the 1970s setting—Loomis captured it so well. That alone made this book worth reading, at least to me. The sexy, sometimes hard-hitting storyline was a bonus. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more from this author.
