Inspired by authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander, and Madeleine L’Engle, Beth determined to become a writer when she was still in grade school. That path meandered through an attempt at astronomy, a linguistics degree, and a brief flirtation with anthropology, but during it all, she worked on her writing, producing numerous short stories, and even completing two (unpublished) novels while in high school and college. Since deciding to focus on her writing, she has published a number of fantasy short stories (and a lone science fiction piece) in various magazines and anthologies. "The Herd Lord", a novella about a war among centaurs, was published in 2011, and her first full-length novel, "Etched in Fire" was released in 2015. Beth ...more

To fight the dislike of writing when I wasn't inspired, I made myself write 2-4 pages a day, no matter how bad I thought it was. To keep myself from despair over my first drafts, I cultivated a mindset that I could always revise. To prevent "rejectomancy" (the idea that if I was rejected that meant I was no good) I asked a friend to screen my responses from publishers. I also workshop, which is a wonderful way to keep creativity flowing if I am in the right group. Of course, this is just me -- everyone has different strategies.(less)

Over the years I have read books that have helped shape my view of the world, and I want to be able to give that gift to others. I write about what's important to me, and when someone else reads what I have written and understands it, it makes me feel validated. I also love those times when my creativity and inspiration is high, and I feel as if the words almost fall from my fingers and into the keyboard. Working with one's creative self is a tremendous experience.(less)

Pretzels and Möbius Strips: On the Question of Plot Twists

When I was in junior high, I read Asimovs Foundation Trilogy. I absolutely loved it. I re-read it multiple times throughout the years, and each time I marveled at Asimovs tight plotting, culminating in the triple punch of plot twists at the end of the third book. What made this work for me was the fact that one of those twists was solidly set up at the very beginning of the first book, the other t Read more of this blog post »
