He took a step back and let his gaze skim down her, the reflection of the moon on the snow so bright they might well be standing beneath the gas chandelier in his Deadwood hotel lobby. Her deep coat provided a perfect splash of color against a night bathed in white. Her silky blond hair was starting to fall from her updo. She’d curled her hair tonight too, similar to how she’d worn it the first time he’d met her, in the office of Henry’s warehouse, waiting for a suitor who’d gotten drawn into a conversation with Henry.
He tried to swallow, but his throat muscles were so tight the task was nearly impossible. “You did well for yourself. I never had any doubt that you could. But now that I’m here, you don’t have to do everything alone.”
“Maybe I’m so used to doing things myself, I don’t know how to stop.”

“Step over here, where there’s some room.”
He glanced around the cluttered shop, then raised his eyebrows.
Well, there would be room just as soon as she moved the stack of shirts. She bent and gathered them in her arms, then placed them on the table between the socks and mackinaw coats, which of course sent half the pile of socks plopping to the floor, but at least they took up less space than the shirts.
She measured his arms first, from wrist to wrist, never mind that his reach spread wider than the table where she’d just stacked the clothes. Then she did the length of his torso, from his shoulder seam down to his waist, ignoring the hard muscles beneath his shirt as she stretched the tape down him—or at least trying to. But when she wrapped the tape around his chest, much as she did when measuring one of their daughters, her breath hitched, and she stilled. Of course her left hand didn’t reach the tape she’d stretched behind him with her right. She’d known her hands couldn’t touch. So why had she measured him this way? Habit?
He looked down at her, not moving, barely even breathing. His face loomed over her own, her head tilted back to see the blue of his eyes. She needed to step back, put distance between her and this big, burly man who owned too many of her memories.
If only that big, burly man didn’t have the power to trap her beneath his gaze until she forgot how to move.
“Do you do this with the other men that order shirts from you?” he rasped.

A quick sweep around the room told her Megan and Claire had headed straight for the toy box in the corner—bless Dr. Harrington for thinking of children and keeping toys in his parlor. Isaac paced by the door to the sickroom, his wide shoulders hunched and his face as dark and brooding as the storm clouds outside. The other men were milling about, some drinking coffee and eating cookies, some sitting in the chairs placed around the sizable parlor.

The man stared at her.
Jessalyn sucked in a quick breath, but just as suddenly, her lungs forgot to work, trapping the air inside her.
“Jessalyn,” he said.
Or maybe he didn’t say it. Maybe he whispered it, or mouthed it, or thought it.
But she felt the impact of her name on his lips through every inch of her body.

Eagle Harbor, Michigan is located on the northernmost tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. It sticks up into the wild, cold, and often-dangerous waters of Lake Superior, which in turn makes it prone to violent storms. Driving through the town today will only take you a handful of minutes. You'll pass several blocks of houses, a restaurant, hotel, and active lighthouse before proceeding up the Lake Superior coast to the next small town.

Out of the hundreds of men that risked their lives for the life-saving service, one man stands out as the most decorated and most well known. His name is Joshua James, and he lived in Massachusetts. At the age of ten, James watched his mother and baby sister die when the ship they were sailing on got caught in a storm and wrecked a half mile from the harbor.
When he was fifteen, James joined a group of volunteers from the local humane society was the launched a surfboat to go rescue passengers from a floundering ship named Mohawk. That was Jame's first life-saving rescue, but he went on to spend the next sixty years of his life rescuing sailors. First, he worked as a volunteer life-saver for the Massachusetts Humane Society, and then he worked as a station keeper for the U.S. Life-Saving Service. He's credited with saving over 200 lives, and was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal from the life-saving service as well as several other medals from the Massachusetts Humane Society.
James died at the age of 75, after returning from running a life-saving drill in stormy weather. He apparently paddled for over an hour with the other men of his crew while they tested a new surfboat. Upon returning to the beach, he died of a heart attack.
